NTL BASEBALL: NEB RALLIES, BUT FALLS TO WELLSBORO IN WALK-OFF (2024-05-14)

Northern Tier Sports Report
WELLSBORO — It was a barn burner out at Wellsboro as NEB rallied from 6-1 deficit to tie up the Hornets, only to watch them walk it off in the bottom of the seventh, 8-7, in NTL baseball action Tuesday.

Wellsboro used a 4-run second to take a 5-run lead after three. The two teams traded runs in the middle innings, with the Panthers scoring four in the top of the sixth to get back in the game.

They tied it up in the top of the seventh, but the Hornets pushed one across in the bottom half to get the win.

NEB out hit Wellsboro, 8-6, but also more errors, 5-4.

Eli Stanton (2-for-3) had 2-RBI with Connor Johnson (2-for-2) scoring twice and driving in one run. Ethan Hunsinger (1-for-4) had a double with 2-RBI and a run scored, as Kohen Hugo (1-for-4) also scored and rocked a double.

Clay Wiggins (1-for-3) scored twice and drove in a run, as Andrew Beers (1-for-3) also crossed home.

Wiggins started, and went 2 1/3-innings for the no decision, striking out one with six walks, two hits, and six runs, four of them earned.

Josh Stanton went the final 3 2/3-innings for the loss, striking out four with four walks, four hits, and two unearned runs.

In the top of the second Johnson drove in Wiggins with a 1-out single to tie the game up at 1-1.

By the top of the fourth the Panthers were down 6-1 when Johnson drew a 1-out walk. After an out an error off the bat of Hunsinger allowed Johnson to score to cut it to 6-2.

Then came the big sixth inning with Wiggins walking on a four pitch base on balls. After an out Johnson was hit by a pitch, followed by Beers drawing a walk to load the bases.

Hunsinger then doubled in Wiggins and Johnson to make it 7-4. A Stanton single then brought in Beers and Hunsinger to make it 7-6.

Hugo would lead off the top of the sixth with a double, then scored on a Wiggins single to knot the game up at 7-7.

NEB would load the bases with no outs but Wellsboro got a double play to keep NEB from scoring, then a ground out to get out of the inning.

In the bottom the seventh the Hornets would walk it off on a passed ball steal of home.

NEB (11-7) is slated to host NP-Mansfield on Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. start.
