NTL SOFTBALL: TOWANDA'S GREENLAND GETS 300TH K AS KNIGHTS TOP SAYRE (2024-05-14)

Northern Tier Sports Report
WYSOX — Shay Greenland hit a career milestone and Towanda rolled to an 11-1 win over Sayre in five innings for their fourth win in a row during NTL softball action Tuesday.

Greenland earned her 300th career strikeout, fanning seven Sayre hitters in four innings of work to get the win. She allowed no walks, two hits, and one unearned run.

“It definitely meant a lot,” remarked Greenland. “Having my catcher back for it, it’s a really special moment that I get to do that in my high school career. It’s a great win for us, great defense behind me, it’s just a good game overall.”

Leila Cobb came in for the final inning, striking out two.

The Knights jumped out with a 4-run first inning, then scored another in the third. They tacked on two more in the fourth, then notched four more in the fifth to get the win.

“I think we’re just trying to pick up as many wins as we can right now, and prepare ourselves for districts,” Greenland said.

At the plate Greenland (2-for-4) had 3-RBI as Aleah Johnson (2-for-3) had a double with 3-RBI and two runs scored.

Payton Perry (2-for-4) had a double with two runs scored, as Brynsen Vargason (2-for-3) had a double with a run scored, and an RBI.

Brooklyn Evans (1-for-2) scored three times with an RBI as Taelynn Brabant (1-for-4) scored and drove in a run.

Kynlee Kunkle (1-for-3) had an RBI, Caedence Wells (1-for-2) had a hit, and Cobb scored a run.

“I think we stepped up with our bats a little bit,” said Towanda coach Caitlyn Crawford. “It feels good come off of that three loss streak and finish the season strong. We just want to carry this momentum into districts now.”

In the first Perry led off with a hit, then scored on a Brabant single. After a walk to Evans, and an out, Johnson drove them both in with a 2-run single. She later scored on a Kunkle hit to make it 4-0.

The Knights got one across in the third with 2-outs as a dropped third strike against Vargason allowed Johnson to score to make it 5-0.

After Sayre scored in the fourth Perry led off the bottom half of the inning with a double. She later scored on a 1-out Evans single for a 6-1 lead.

Greenland then drove in Evans to make it 7-1.

Wells led off the the big fifth inning with a hit. Vargason then doubled in her courtesy runner, Hannah Crawford, to make it 8-1.

After a walk to Cobb Sayre got back to back outs, but another walk to Evans loaded the bases.

That set up Greenland’s 2-run single for the 10-1 score. A Johnson double scored Evans to end the game.

Towanda (11-8) has one more game left, Williamson at home on Thursday, as they try to move up the district standings as far as they can.

“Our defense is pretty good right now,” said Crawford. “We need to focus on continuing to make hard contact with the ball and just continuing to hit.”
