NTL BASEBALL: TOWANDA SPLITS SEASON ENDING DOUBLE-HEADERS (2024-05-17)
Northern Tier Sports ReportWYSOX — Towanda split a season ending double-header, beating Williamson 12-0 in five innings but then falling to Wellsboro 6-1 in the night cap.
GAME 1
The Knights used an 8-run first inning to jump on the Warriors and never looked back as Jack Wheaton and Lucas Vincent combined for a no-hitter.
Rylee Sluyter (2-for-2) had two doubles, 3-RBI, and two runs scored, as Cameron Fields (2-for-3) had a double with two runs scored, and 2-RBI.
Gianni Assante Di Cupillo (2-for-3) scored three times and had an RBI, as Teagan Irish (1-for-3) had a double with a run driven in.
Dawson Butts (1-for-3) scored twice with an RBI, Jack Tavani (1-for-2) also crossed home with Wil Shrawder (1-for-2) getting a hit.
Sam Fulmer scored and had an RBI as Wheaton also crossed home.
Wheaton got the start, and win, going four innings with five strikeouts, one walk, and no hits. Vincent pitched the final inning with three strikeouts.
In the big first inning Sluyter led off with a walk, then two batters later Wheaton was hit by a pitch.
An Assante single drove in Sluyter, while Butts drove in Wheaton for a 2-0 lead.
Fields then rocked a 2-run double to make it 4-0.
The Warriors would get a second out but Towanda kept going after that, with Fulmer getting hit by a pitch. Tavani then singled in Fields, followed by a Sluyter double driving in Fulmer and Tavani.
An Irish double plated Sluyter for the 8-0 lead.
Towanda added two more in the second as they used three singles to load the bases. Fulmer would drive in Assante with a fielder’s choice.
After a walk to Tavani Sluyter drew a base on balls to bring in Fields to make it 10-0.
The Knights scored their final two runs in the third as Assante drew a 1-out walk, followed by Butts reaching on an error.
After a second out Assante would score on a passed ball, followed by Butts reaching home on an error.
GAME 2
Towanda out hit Wellsboro the second game, 9-7, but couldn’t put up one run. The Hornets scored three in the second, one in the third, and two in the fourth with Towanda scoring their one run in the bottom of the fourth.
Sluyter (2-for-4) had an RBI with Owen Lane (2-for-2) and Tavani (2-for-2) also earning multi-hit games.
Wheaton (1-for-4) had a double with Irish (1-for-4) and Fulmer (1-for-1) both getting a hit. Fields scored their lone run.
Tavani started, and went five innings with six strikeouts, no walks, seven hits, and six runs, three of which were earned.
Assante tossed the final two innings with two strikeouts, one walk, no hits, and no runs.
In the fourth Sluyter hit a 2-out single with bases loaded to drive in Fields for their lone run. The Knights stranded nine bases runners in the contest.
Towanda ends their season 7-13.
