NTL BASEBALL: WYALUSING TOPS SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT FOR SECOND STRAIGHT DISTRICT TITLE (2024-05-26)

WILLIAMSPORT — Wyalusing used a 6-run fourth inning to beat South Williamsport, 9-6, in the District IV, Class AA baseball title game Saturday, beating the Mounties for the second year year to earn back to back championships.

“I’m just really proud of the how we overcame all the adversity as a team, and especially being down early in the game,” said Wyalusing pitcher Hunter House. “I’m really grateful and thankful to be a part of this team.”


The Rams were down 2-0 after the second but took a 6-2 lead midway through the fourth. South got three back in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 1-run game. The Mounties tied the game up in the fifth.


Wyalusing would retake the lead with a 2-run sixth, then added another run in the seventh for the 3-run win.


“It’s just a great feeling to prove ourselves as the best team in the district,” said CJ Carr. “We fell short of a league title and we weren’t consistently playing our best baseball during the regular season, but when the chips are down this team will come to play. Our motto is peak at the right time of the year, and we were able to execute perfectly this week, and come away with another district title.”


Carr went 3-for-5 to lead the Rams at the plate, with a run scored and an RBI, while Nick Vanderpool (2-for-4) also scored and drove in a run.


Isaac Shaffer (2-for-3) scored twice and drove in two runs with Trehnon Hugo (1-for-3) getting a double with two runs scored.


House (1-for-4) also had a double with 2-RBI with Kenny Mapes (1-for-4), Casey God (1-for-4), and Parker Petlock each scoring a run. Petlock also drove one in.


House went 6 2/3-innings on 108 pitches to get the win, striking out five with three walks, eight hits, and six earned runs.


Hugo came on in the bottom of the seventh, but after walking two batters, they went to Petlock, who got the final out.


The Rams have been clutch with two outs all season, and they showed that again in the fourth as they scored all six runs with two outs.


Hugo led off with a double, followed by Mapes hitting a single. After a pop out God reached on an infield hit to load the bases.


South would get a strikeout, but Petlock would draw a walk to bring in Hugo.


Shaffer then gave the Rams the lead with a 2-run single to make it 3-2.


A Carr hit driven Petlock, followed by Shaffer scoring on a Vanderpool single. Carr would later score on a wild pitch for the 4-run lead.


South would get their own clutch hitting in the bottom half, scoring three runs with two outs to make it a 1-run game.


They would squeeze out another run in the fifth to tie the game.


After threatening in the top half of the fifth the Rams got back to back walks from Vanderpool and Hugo to lead off the sixth.


After an out House doubled in both runners to make it 8-6 Rams.


In the seventh an error off the bat of Hugo with two outs scored Shaffer for the 9-6 lead.


House retired the first two Mounties in the bottom half, but reached his pitch limit. After back to back walks Petlock induced a ground out to get the ender.


With the win Wyalusing will host the first round state game on Monday, June 3 as they take on the runner-up from District VI.
