ROME — NEB’s Melanie Shumway will be taking the pitch at Lackawanna College next season as she suits up for the women’s soccer team.

“I have always wanted to play (college soccer) since I started this sport, maybe 13 years ago,” Shumway said. “My freshman year I definitely took it very seriously, even in just my youth years, but I played extra soccer throughout my freshman to my senior year.”

Shumway helped NEB to some of their best seasons in program history, winning a district game her sophomore year and battling with the top teams in the NTL for a league title her junior year.

She also enjoyed the travel scene, seeing all the different soccer out there.

“It was really exciting,” Shumway said. “I grew up watching my sister do travel, but being able to do travel with the sport that I love, it’s awesome.”

Lackawanna coach Daniel Badyrka liked what he saw from Shumway and reached out to her.

“When we went and looked at the college, originally, it was just a very nice campus,” said Shumway. “And he was a very nice coach, and that’s a big part of the decision, is that he’s such a good guy that is going to help me with my life.”

Shumway didn’t have much a list, especially after she visited Lackawanna.

“There wasn’t too many, but I think this one just really reached out to me because it was close to home, but also not too close,” said Shumway.

She’ll be studying to be a surgical tech.
