Elmira’s Brady Magliocca saved his best for last, earning a top-20 finish at the New York State Championships to help him become The Sports Reports' 2023-24 “Boys’ Golfer of the Year.”

Magliocca had a career-best round of even-par 72 at the second day of States, to go with a 77 in the first round, to finish 17th at the state championships.

On the year, Magliocca averaged 2-over par for nine holes, averaging 38 for nine holes. He led Elmira to their first ever STAC Championship.

The “Newcomer of the Year” is Athens freshman Eli Hicks. Hicks had an 82.4 scoring average this year, and finished third at the District 4 Championships, missing states by just one shot in a three-hole playoff with teammate Evan Cooper.

Athens coach Lenny Pientka is the “Coach of the Year.” He coached the Wildcats to an unbeaten season and NTL championship for a second year in a row and took five golfers to the District 4 Championships..

Evan Cooper, Athens:
Cooper led Athens to its second consecutive unbeaten season as the top golfer in the NTL with a scoring average of 79, including a low round of 74. Cooper out-dueled teammate Eli Hicks in a three-hole playoff to earn the second and final state berth from District 4, Class AAA. He shot 78 on Day 1 of the PIAA Championship and finished 65th with a two-day total of 162.

Evan Sickler, Tioga: Sickler averaged 3.5-over par for 9 holes. He led Tioga to its second Section IV title in program history. Sickler shot a 79 on Day 2 of the Section IV Medalists Tournament to qualify for States, where he shot an 80 on Day 1.

Dylan Saxon, Athens: Saxon finished third in the NTL with a scoring average of 82. He had a remarkably consistent season, with a low round of 76 and a high round 85. Saxon finished fifth at the District 4 Championships.

Jacob Staats, Horseheads: Staats average 4.1-over par for 9 holes. He was a state qualifier for the Blue Raiders.

Andy Hermansen, North Penn-Mansfield: Hermansen finished fifth in the NTL with a scoring average of 83.58, and had three runner-up finishes during the season. He qualified for States after a runner-up finish at the District 4 Championships. He shot a two-day total of 170 at States to tie for 67th.

Jordan Vargeson, Cowanesque Valley: Vargeson was second in the NTL with a scoring average of 81.43. He had a low round of 74, and won low-medal honors twice. He qualified for Districts.

Patrick Tammariello, Owego: Tammariello had a 38.5 scoring average for 9 holes, and was Section IV, Class B runner-up. He placed 15th at the STAC Championship, and competed in the Section IV medalist tournament.

The Second 7

Jackson Cavalier, Elmira: Cavalier averaged 4.8-over par for 9 holes. He was a state qualifier for the Express.

Tyler Roe, Tioga: Roe was a key figure in Tioga’s run to its second-ever Section IV title. He qualified for Section IV medalist tournament, and had a plus-six scoring average for nine holes on the year.

Nick Salsman, Wyalusing: Salsman was sixth in the NTL in scoring average at 84.43 this season.

Hayden Żuchowski, Wellsboro: Zuchowski had a scoring average of 85.09 this year for Wellsboro, and was sevnth in the NTL in scoring average. He finished sixth at districts and was a state qualifier.

Noah Banks, Candor: Banks had a 41.3 scoring average this year, and competed in the Section IV Medalist Tournament. He finished ninth at the Section IV, Class D Championships.

Cooper Taft, Elmira: Taft had a scoring average of 6.4-over par this season for Elmira as they won the STAC title for the first time.

Graham Welles, Towanda: Wells had a scoring average of 88.27, with a low round of 82 this season. He was eighth in the NTL in scoring average.
