YOUTH: BIG HITS PROPEL TOWANDA MAJORS BASEBALL PAST TUNKHANNOCK (2024-06-30)
Northern Tier Sports ReportTOWANDA — Cooper Aukema hit a 1-out grand slam in the fourth inning to help Towanda Majors All-star baseball pull away from Tunkhannock, 9-4, during District 15 winner’s bracket semifinal action Sunday.
Towanda led 2-1 after the first, and pushed that lead to 3-1. Midway through the fourth the had their biggest lead of the night, 7-1.
Tunkhannock got one of those runs back in the bottom half, then cut it to 8-4 after fifth. Towanda added a safety run in the sixth for the 5-run win.
Aukema (2-for-3) had double to go with the grand slam, plus 4-RBI with two runs scored, as Drew Maghamez (2-for-3) had a double with 2-RBI and a run scored.
Nolyn Tuttle (1-for-2) scored twice as Wyatt Jones, Brayden Cox (1-for-3), Hudson Nash (1-for-2), and Arlo Snyder all crossed home. Snyder and Sidney Bacorn each added an RBI.
Jones started, and went 2 2/3-innings with four strikeouts. Dempsey Stevens tossed the next inning with two strikeouts, as Tuttle pitched one-third of an inning.
Nash pitched for two innings with two strikeouts.
Towanda moves on to face Wellsboro in the winner’s bracket final on Wednesday at Wellsboro. A win and they are one way away from a District 15 title, a loss and they have to play the consolation bracket winner for the right to face Wellsboro again.
