YOUTH: RTL MINORS COMES UP SHORT AGAINST ATHENS (2024-07-01)
Northern Tier Sports ReportATHENS — The RTL Minors All-star baseball team dropped their first game of the season, falling 8-5 to Athens in the winner’s bracket final on Sunday.
They were in a hole early, down 5-1 after the first inning. After the two teams traded runs in the third, Athens went up 7-2 with a run in the fourth.
RTL rallied in the fifth with three runs, but in the bottom half Athens got one back for the 3-run win.
Wesley Carr (2-for-3) had an RBI as Ethan Shaffer (1-for-3) drove in two runs. Cayden Benjamin (1-for-3) and Elijah Rought (1-for-2) both scored twice, as Eli Howard also crossed home.
Emerson Clouse (1-for-3) and Elliott Campbell (1-for-2) both had hits.
Shaffer started, and went one-third of an inning with a strikeout. Clouse tossed the next 2 2/3-innings with three strikeouts.
Carr finished out the final two innings with one strikeout.
RTL will host Tunkhannock on Tuesday with a 6 p.m. start. The winner will get face Athens in Sayre after July 4, the loser is done for the season.
