THE YEAR'S TOP MOMENTS/STORYLINES - PART 1 (2024-07-16)

Northern Tier Sports Report
Plenty happened over this past season, most of it good, some of it sad, but all of it memorable. Here are some of the top moments from the 2023-2024 sports season.

25. Towanda walks-off Wyalusing during Pink Game: Towanda won the first game in a blow-out but Wyalusing was a different team the second time around. The Black Knights took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third, with the Rams getting one back in the top of the fourth. Things stayed that way until the fireworks in the seventh when Wyalusing pushed two across in the top half of the inning to take a 3-2 lead. In the bottom half of the inning Towanda had bases loaded with two outs when two runs came around on an error to give the Knights the win. With both teams returning most of their roster, look for more rivalry games like this down the road.

24. Canton girls’ hoops repeats as Christmas Tournament Champions: For the second year in a row Canton held on to win their hoops tournament, this time with plenty of new faces. MVP Kendall Kitchen limited Millville’s best player, while freshman Cailyn VanNoy had a strong all-around game with 11 points, six boards, four assists, and five steals - including a big basket with under a minute left. Daveian Crowley also had a double-double as part of the Warriors’ strong frontline play. All five of their starters will return this coming year so we’ll see if they can go for the 3-peat.

23. NEB softball edges CV for playoff win: For the second year in a row the Panthers lost to the NTL Small School title to Cowanesque Valley, only to send them packing in the first round of the playoffs. NEB was down 4-3 going into the final inning when they rallied for two runs, then held CV defensively in the bottom half of the inning. Ton iHerb, Makenna Callear, Hannah Berger, and Melanie Shumway all had multi-hit games, while Kiarra DeLancey had a home run. NEB followed that up with 1-0 loss to Muncy in the semifinals, building a lot of momentum going into next season.

22. Troy volleyball edges Williamson in five set thriller in district play: Troy avoided a late match collapse as they held on to beat Williamson, 3-2, in the first round of districts. Williamson had swept Troy earlier in the season, but it was the Trojans pulling out 25-23 and 25-18 wins to start the match. After giving two back they won the final set 15-9 with Kali Ayres serving up six straight points to rally the Trojans. Ayres finished with six kills, 21 assists, four aces, and seven digs, as Aryanna Andrus added 13 kills and five blocks. In the first set Brenna Jackson helped Troy tie it up at 23-all with a kill and ace, then Ayres and Andrus finished off the set with back to back kills, setting the tone for the win.

21. Wyalusing girls’ basketball holds on to beat NCC to take third at districts: Wyalusing won a battle of wills with Northumberland County Christian, hammering the offensive boards with 12, while freshman guard Alyssa Botts stepped up with 15 points. Treanna Nickeson limited NCC’s top player as freshman Emily Johns came up just short of a double-double with eight points and nine boards. It was a game runs in the first half, followed by back and forth play in the second. Chloe Bennett had the big shot of the night, though, hitting a 3-ball with 1:17 left to play to put the Rams up four. They made enough free throws from there to pull out the win, and earn a trip to states.
