THE YEAR'S TOP MOMENTS/STORYLINES - PART 7 (2024-07-22)

Northern Tier Sports Report
The league was seeing a lot of red this year as across all sports in all seasons Troy was raising a lot of banners. The school offers 13 sports and Troy won league titles in six of them - football, boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, girls’ soccer, boys’ track and field, and baseball.

Two of those teams had undefeated regular season - football, and boys’ basketball - while the girls’ hoops team had an undefeated league season. The girls’ soccer team didn’t lose a league match, a tie their only blemish, while the boys’ track and field went undefeated in dual meets before winning the title at the NTL Championships. Baseball had the most league losses - two - out of 15 league games.

Troy football didn’t play a competitive game in the regular season - league or otherwise - outscoring opponents 484-68 in their 10 games. In league play they scored over 40 points in five of their six games, the only time they failed to reach that mark was a 37-0 win over Towanda. They put the exclamation point on the season with a 52-0 win over Canton to get ‘The Shoe’ back. They road an athletic, high scoring offense, and fast, physical defense to the district title game, where they lost to eventual state champions, Southern Columbia.

The girls’ soccer team (which gets a big assist from Canton) outscored league opponents 42-7, with Williamson tying them 2-2. They would get revenge with a 2-0 win at home over the Warriors while sweeping Athens (2-1, 2-0), Wyalusing (1-0, 4-0), and ending the season with a big win over Towanda (5-2).

The boys’ basketball team matched the football in dominance, going 22-0 on the season along with their 16-0 league record. They won three different tournaments along the way - including the NTL Showcase - and finished the season with an average win margin of 29.9 points per game. They scored 70 or more points 10 times in the season, and held teams to 30 or less points six times. They didn’t lose a game until the district final.

The girls’ hoops team also went 16-0 in the league and finished the regular season 19-3. They won the NTL Showcase for the first time in program history as they also reached the district semifinals. They out scored their league opponents by an average of 26.8 points per game, and only had one real close contest all season, the double overtime win at Williamson. They averaged nearly 60 points per game and held league opponents under 30 points six times during the season.

The baseball team went 13-2 in the league, losing a cross-over game to Canton, and splitting with Wyalusing during the season. They out scored their opponents 163-53, and hit double digits in runs 10 times during the year. After losing to Wyalusing to put the title hunt in jeopardy Troy won their next seven league games by an average margin of 10 runs.

The Troy boys’ track and field team went undefeated in their dual meet season, but the NTL Championships decide the league title. There they held off a pesky Wellsboro squad to win by 17 points, and win their first title since 1981. Ben Warburton and Avery Sens both had league titles on the day while they got points in every event. They also won the Lasagna Invitational during the season.

Troy could have had even more champions, as boys’ cross-country and softball both finished runners-up in their divisions.

The Red-and-White weren’t the only area programs to hang banners as NEB had five league champions (boys and girls cross-country, boys and girls basketball, and volleyball), Towanda had two (boys cross-country and wrestling), and Canton had one (baseball). Wyalusing didn’t have a league champ but baseball did win a district title.
