NTL CROSS-COUNTRY: WYALUSING HAS RUNNERS WITH BIG GOALS THIS YEAR (2024-08-22)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportTheir numbers may not be as big as they’re used to but the Wyalusing cross-country teams have plenty to watch for both boys and girls.
On the girls’ side they just missed going to states last year by two points, but return five of their top seven, including their top three of Megan King, Riley Porter, and Camryn Gesford.
King and Porter both qualified for states individually a year ago, as King took home bronze at the district meet.
“I’m really excited,” said King. “I think we have a really good varsity girls team this year.”
In the NTL Small School race they return more runners from last year’s team than defending champions NEB.
“I really want to take my whole team back to states again,” continued King.
Individually she might be battling for the district title with the top two runners ahead of her either graduated or not running.
“I’ve been doing a lot of workouts,” King explained.
On the boys’ side their big returnee is Trennan Tewksbury, who was a state qualifier last year, taking fourth at districts.
“It’s my last cross-country season so I want to make it count,” he said. “Last year was the first successful states race I had, so I’m just ready to repeat that, and hopefully take home a medal this year.”
Tewksbury was 47th a year ago at states, a little over 30 minutes from the medals.
“I’ve done a good amount of threshold work, a lot of easy runs to just get a good base for when I start to do harder workouts,” explained Tewksbury.
Team wise they return their top five from a year ago, but are still young as they look to improve.
“It looks to probably be a rebuilding year,” Tewksbury said. “Probably third or fourth at districts would be really good.”
