NTL FOOTBALL: TOWANDA FALLS ON THE ROAD TO HUGHESVILLE (2024-08-31)

Northern Tier Sports Report
HUGHESVILLE — It was a rough first road game for Towanda as they fell 42-6 to Hughesville in non-league football action Friday.

The Knights couldn’t stop Hughesville’s passing attack as their quarterback, Blake Davis, was 12-for-20 for 286 yards and five scores. His top target was Conor Knight, who hauled in seven catches for 168 yards and three touchdowns.

For Towanda they did manage to put 243 yards in the game but 59 of those came on the final play as Curtis Maynard scampered for a touchdown to prevent the shutout.

Maynard led them on the ground with two carries for 63 yards as Gage Evans added 28 yards on four touches.

Quarterback Reese Sluyter had 12 carries for 25 yards, and was 9-for-21 from the pocket for 94 yards with four interceptions.

Tahshon Gardner had three catches for 59 yards to lead Towanda with Rylee Sluyter getting three receptions for 21 yards.

Towanda didn’t pick up their first first down until Hughesville was up 14-0 thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from Davis, the first a 60-yarder to Hayden Maneval, the second 27-yards to Conor Knight.

Their third drive they started at their own 21 and did make it to the Spartan 38-yard line when they fumbled away the ball.

The two teams traded possessions until Hughesville got a blocked punt, taking over at the Knight 17-yard line. Two plays in Davis found Knight for a 16-yard reception to go up 21-0 after the extra point.

Towanda’s ensuing drive started with promise as Rylee Sluyter ran off 10-yards, but once again fizzled out around midfield.

The Spartans got the ball at their own 7-yard line and went 93-yards to pay dirt in just three minutes as Davis Knight for the hat trick on a 54-yarder to make it 28-0.

The Knights gave their fans something to cheer for late in the half as Reese Sluyter hit Tahshon Gardner for a 49-yard strike to inside the Hughesville 20-yard line.

However, the Spartans defense forced a turnover on downs to get the ball back, and went into the locker room up four scores.

The Spartans would score on their initial drive of the second half on a 20-yard pass from Davis to Brenden Fisher to put the game into the mercy rule.

A Levi Green pick six in the fourth made it 42-0 before Maynard’s big run to end the game.

Towanda (1-1) hosts NP-Mansfield next Friday.
