THE WEEK AHEAD: A SHORTER WEEK AS CROSS-COUNTRY JOINS THE FRAY (2024-09-01)
Northern Tier Sports ReportThe calendar turns to September this week as Fall sports action continues. Troy, Towanda, and Canton football all return home while Wyalusing hits the road again. Cross-country dual meets get started while all other sports continue to get deeper in their league schedules.
FOOTBALL
Thursday. September 5
Wyalusing (2-0) at Wellsboro (0-2), 7 p.m.: The Rams are coming off a big win over CV as their Tioga Country tour continues with the Hornets. Wellsboro has been outscored 96-7 over their first two games against Montoursville and Muncy.
Friday, September 6
NP-Mansfield (1-1) at Towanda (1-1), 7 p.m.: The Knights are coming off a tough loss at Hughesville but get Riley Vanderpool back this week. NPM is coming off a 35-0 win over Sayre as their Bradford County tour continues.
South Williamsport (1-1) at Troy (2-0), 7 p.m.: Troy comes in with plenty of momentum with their win over Dover while South is smarting from a 17-8 loss at home to Canton.
Saturday, September 7
Athens (1-1) at Canton (2-0), 1 p.m.: The Warriors’ annual afternoon game as they come in riding high off their win at South. Athens defeated Northwest last week to break into the win column.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Tuesday, September 3
Towanda, NEB at Athens, 4:30 p.m.: These three teams descend on Round Top for a big dual league meet on the girls and boys sides. Especially, when it comes to Large School, this will give an idea of where everybody is.
CV, Troy, at NP-Mansfield, 4:30 p.m.: The Trojans face two Large School opponents as the boys begin their quest for a Division-I title.
Canton, Sayre at Wellsboro, 4:30 p.m.: Canton starts their season out west with Sayre and Wellsboro.
Wyalusing at Sullivan County, 4:30 p.m.: The Rams hit the road to start the season as they take on a fellow Small School opponent.
Friday, September 6
Towanda, Canton at Wyalusing’s Lasagna Invitational, 4 p.m.: The Rams welcome nearby teams for this Friday night run. Things start off with a free fun run for Elementary school kids at 3:30 p.m.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Wednesday, September 4
Towanda (0-3) at Wyalusing (4-0-1), 4 p.m.: The Rams are coming off a close win over Elk Lake as they bring in their rivals. It’s been a rough start to the season for the Knights, but they did play Athens tough in their 3-1 loss.
Wellsboro (1-1) at Troy (5-1), 4 p.m.: Troy has already gotten through a third of their season as they come off a split at the Montoursville Tournament. Wellsboro recently defeated NPM 4-0.
NPM (0-2) at NEB (0-1-1), 4 p.m.: The Panthers batted Wyalusing to a tie in their last outing as they look to get their first win of the season. The Tigers are coming off loss to Wyalusing and Wellsboro.
Friday, September 6
NEB (0-1-1) at Mountain View, 4:15 p.m.: The Panthers head to District II for this non-league contest.
Saturday, September 7
Towanda (0-3) at NEB (0-1-1), 10 a.m.: The second of a back to back for NEB while Towanda hits the road four the fourth time in five games.
Troy (5-1) at Wyalusing (4-0-1), 10 a.m.: A big early season test for the Rams as they host the Trojans for a morning contest. The Trojans edged Wyalusing 1-0 at their place a year ago.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Tuesday, September 3
NEB (0-3) at Williamson (2-1), 4 p.m.: The Panthers will be looking to break into the win column after three tough losses to start the year. The Warriors are coming off a tough loss themselves, falling 3-0 to Towanda last week.
Troy (0-5) at Towanda (1-1), 6 p.m.: The Knights are riding high off a win over the defending league champions, Williamson. They host a Troy squad that’s looking to end their early season losing streak.
Thursday, September 5
NEB (0-3) at Troy (0-5), 4 p.m.: Both teams coming in looking to turn things around as the Trojans finally get to play a home contest.
Galeton (0-3) at Towanda (1-1), 6 p.m.: Another home contest, this time against the Tigers who’ve been outscored 25-3 to start the season.
Saturday, September 7
Southern Columbia (0-1) at Towanda (1-1), 1 p.m.: The Knights end their week long home stand with a tough non-league game against the Tigers. Southern Columbia opened the season with a loss at Shenandoah Valley.
Elk Lake at NEB (0-3), 3 p.m.: The Panthers bring in their District II neighbors for their first home match of the season.
VOLLEYBALL
Tuesday, September 3
Hughesville (1-1) at NEB (2-0), 7 p.m.: The Panthers have another non-league contest as they welcome the Spartans. Hughesville is coming off a 3-0 win over Sugar Valley Rural Charter.
Thursday, September 5
Troy (1-1) at Towanda (1-1), 7 p.m.: The Trojans are coming off a 3-0 win over Athens with both teams losing to Williamson last week. Towanda opened the week with a 3-1 win over CV.
Sayre (0-2) at NEB (2-0), 7 p.m.: A rough start for Sayre as they face NEB in their first divisional match of the season. The Panthers will be playing their fourth straight match at home.
CV (0-2) at Canton (0-2), 7 p.m.: Both teams are looking for their first win after a pair of early season setbacks. Canton is coming off a loss to NEB, while CV fell at Towanda.
Wyalusing (1-2) at Wellsboro (2-0), 7 p.m.: The Rams gave NPL a tough battle in their 3-0 loss last week while the Hornets have opened with a pair of cross-divisional matches this season.
Saturday, September 7
Canton, Towanda, Troy, NEB at Williamson Tournament, 9 a.m.: The Warriors bring in some of the best teams from the area, which features several NTL squads.
Wyalusing (1-2) at Elk Lake, 11:30 p.m.: The Rams hit the road for another non-league contest to end the week.
GOLF
Tuesday, September 3
NTL at Corey Creek, 1 p.m.: The league heads out west to Corey Creek as teams try to knock off Athens, who has won 19-straight league matches.
Towanda at White Deer, 2 p.m.: The Knights head down to White Deer, which hosts the District IV team competition this season.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Tuesday, September 3
Towanda (2-4) at CV (0-1), 4 p.m.: The Knights are riding a 2-match win streak as they hit the road again, this time at CV.
Thursday, September 5
Galeton at Towanda (2-4), 4 p.m.: The Knights host a non-league squad to end their week.
