NTL GIRLS' SOCCER: TOWANDA GETS BIG DAY FROM FORWARDS IN 7-0 WIN OVER NEB (2024-09-07)

ROME — The Towanda girls’ soccer wasn’t bothered by the rainy weather Saturday morning as they scored a season high seven goals in their 7-0 win over NEB during NTL action.

“I’m very proud of the team,” said Towanda coach Jacob McGuire. “They never quit on each other. We had a difficult opening stretch of the season, but they kept after it, and we knew if we kept working on everything we’d have some opportunities.”

After scoring just one goal over their first four games they had three in the first 20 minutes on Saturday, eventually taking a 4-0 lead at the half before tacking on three more in the second half.

Anna Dunn led the way with four goals, while assisting on the other three, which were scored by Clara Glantz. Glantz has spent much of her career as a goalie trying to prevent hat tricks, so this was a little new for her.

“It felt pretty good,” she said. “It was nice to have Anna up there to help me and assist them. We definitely had good passes, better passes this game that previous ones. All the pieces of the puzzle were put together today.”

Towanda controlled much of the game, out shooting NEB 19-4, as Mya Maynard made four saves in net to get the clean sheet for the Knights. Leah Beebe and Ava Lambert combined for 22 saves as the Panther keepers.

Towanda also had a 4-2 corner kick advantage.

It was a down pour for much of the first half, making it difficult for both squads, though the rain let up in the second half.

“We embraced the elements,” said McGuire. “I think it was good to see everybody having fun out there, playing hard. The rain, we didn’t want it to be a factor so we embraced it.”

NEB’s best chance to score in the first half was when Mallorie Maynard got inside the box, but put her shot over the cross-bar when it was 2-0. Lillie Maynard also just missed the far post on a free kick outside the box.

Towanda (1-4) will host NP-Mansfield on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. start, while NEB (1-3-1) welcomes Wellsboro on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. start.
