THE WEEK AHEAD: FOOTBALL HITS THE MID-WAY POINT OF THE SEASON AS GOLF, GIRLS' TENNIS ENTERS THEIR FINAL STRETCH (2024-09-15)

Northern Tier Sports Report
It may feel like August outside but the calendar says mid-September. Football and cross-country are hitting the mid-point of their regular seasons, golf and girls’ tennis are past theirs, while other sports will be closing in on theirs soon.

FOOTBALL

Thursday, September 19

South Williamsport (1-3) at Wyalusing (3-1), 7 p.m.: Both teams are coming off losses, with South falling 22-21 to Milton, while the Rams dropped a 28-3 loss at Montgomery. The Rams will be happy to return home, their first time back there since Week 1.


Friday, September 20

Towanda (3-1) at Troy (4-0), 7 p.m.: Both teams are coming off big weeks last week with the Trojans blanking Athens 55-0, and the Knights pulling away from Wellsboro, 36-16. Troy has outscored opponents 190-22 so far this season.


Montgomery (2-2) at Canton (3-1), 7 p.m.: Two offensive juggernauts the past two weeks will meet in Canton. The Raiders have scored 83 points over their past two games - both wins - while Canton has scored 93, going 1-1.


GIRLS’ TENNIS

Monday, September 16

Towanda (5-5) at NP-Liberty (2-4), 4 p.m.: The Knights have two league matches left, and if they win both they claim the NTL title. They won their first match 3-2 at home with NPL.


Wednesday, September 18

CV (0-5) at Towanda (5-5), 4 p.m.: The Knights won the first meeting, 3-2, on the road, and a win here, coupled with a win on Monday, with give the Knights the league title.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Tuesday, September 17

Towanda, Wyalusing, at Troy, 4:30 p.m.: Towanda and Troy will likely decide the NTL Large School boys’ champion at Mt. Pisgah for the second time in two years. On the girls’ side there are several individual state qualifiers in the race as the Lady Knights look to stay undefeated.


NEB at Canton, 4:30 p.m.: Canton and NEB boys come in undefeated on the season.


Saturday, September 21

Wyalusing at PIAA Foundation Race: The Rams head to Hershey to get a taste of the state competition.


VOLLEYBALL

Monday, September 16

South Williamsport (4-2) at Canton (1-4), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors come in looking to break a 2-match losing streak while South is coming off a win over Sugar Valley Rural Charter.


Tuesday, September 17

NEB (8-0) at Canton (1-4), 7:30 p.m.: The Panthers won the first match 3-0 as they look to run away in the District IV, Class A standings. Canton is coming off losses to Williamson and Troy.


Troy (5-1) at Wellsboro (6-1), 7:30 p.m.: A match-up of two undefeated teams in the NTL Large School Division. Wellsboro recently lost to Williamsport, 3-0, a team Troy beat 3-2.


Williamson (5-0) at Wyalusing (3-4), 7:30 p.m.: The Rams have battled back after a tough start to get close to .500. The Warriors are undefeated in match play so far this year as they sit atop the District IV, Class AA standings.


Thursday, September 19

Towanda (3-3) at Troy (5-1), 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans won the first match 3-0 but Towanda is riding a 2-match win streak to get back to .500.


Canton (1-4) at Sayre (0-3), 7:30 p.m.: The Redskins are looking for their first win of the season while Canton moves into divisional play.


Saturday, September 21

Troy (5-1) at Lewisburg (1-4), 1 p.m.: Troy heads south for a non-league contest against the Green Dragons.


Wyalusing, Towanda at Tunkhannock Tournament: The two teams will face some of the toughest competition District II has to offer.


BOYS’ SOCCER

Wednesday, September 18

Wellsboro (7-1) at NEB (1-7-1), 4 p.m.: The league leading Hornets come East to face the Panthers. NEB usually gives them a game on their home field regardless of their records.


Towanda (4-3) at Athens (3-4-1), 5:30 p.m.: The Knights hit the road as they take on Athens for the first time this season. After a rough start the Wildcats are 2-0-1 over their last three games.


Troy (0-10) at Galeton (2-5), 5:30 p.m.: It was a tough week for the Trojans last week as they faced some of the best teams in the NTL.  After an 0-5 start Galeton has gone 2-2.


Friday, September 20

Millville (4-2) at NEB (1-6-1), 4 p.m.: A big non-league contest for the Panthers. The Quakers come in on a 3-match winning streak.


Saturday, September 21

Montgomery (3-3) at Towanda (4-3), 11:30 a.m.: The Knights end the week with a tough non-league game. The Raiders opened their season with a win over NEB.


Troy (0-10) at NEB (1-6-1), 4 p.m.: The Panthers won the first meeting 3-0 after playing to a scoreless first half. This is part of NEB’s Pink Game Saturday with the girls playing at noon.


GIRLS’ SOCCER

Monday, September 16

Athens (5-0) at Wyalusing (5-1-1), 4 p.m.: The Wildcats have scraped by for an undefeated record so far this season, winning close contests. The Rams didn’t allow a goal until their 4-0 loss to Troy last week.


Tuesday, September 16

Troy (7-1) at NEB (1-6-1), 4 p.m.: The Trojans stayed undefeated in league play with their win over Wyalusing, while NEB is coming off two tough losses this past Saturday.


Towanda (2-4) at Wellsboro (2-4), 5:30 p.m.: The Knights are riding a 2-match winning streak as they head out west The Hornets are coming off a 4-0 loss to Hughesville.


Troy (7-1) at NP-Mansfield (0-5-1), 4 p.m.: Troy has won their last two games with a combined score of 8-0, while NPM is coming off a tie with NCC.


Towanda (2-4) at Williamson (3-4), 4 p.m.: The Warriors went 1-1 at NEB’s Tournament this past weekend.


NEB (1-6-1) at Athens (5-0), 5:30 p.m.: The Panthers head up to the Valley to take on Athens as the Wildcats look to stay unbeaten on the season.


Wyalusing (5-1-1) at Wellsboro (2-4), 5:30 p.m.: The Rams will head west to take on a Hornets squad that is 1-3 over their last four games.


Saturday, September 21

Meadowbrook Christian (1-2) at NEB (1-6-1), noon: The first of two Pink Games at NEB this Saturday as the Panthers look to break their 5-match losing streak.


Towanda (2-4) at Warrior Run (5-1), 3 p.m.: The Knights take on one of the top programs in the district, one that has out scored teams 16-5 so far this season.


GOLF

Monday, September 16

NTL at Shepard Hills, 1 p.m.: The Wildcats have two matches left to push their undefeated streak to 22, and both matches are at home. Towanda has been coming close to unseating them, along with NP-Mansfield, while Wyalusing will be looking to finish strong to earn a spot at team districts.


Thursday, September 19

Towanda at Eagles Mere, 1 p.m.: The Knights head south for a non-league tune-up  before teams begin district play the following week.
