NTL VOLLEYBALL: CANTON HOLDS GREEN OUT IN HONOR OF VAYDA BRYAN, FALLS TO NEB 3-1 (2024-09-18)

CANTON — Canton celebrated the lift of former player Vayda Bryan with a ‘Green Out’ in their 3-1 loss to NEB during NTL Small School volleyball action Tuesday.

Green was Bryan’s favorite color with most of the stands decked in one shade of green or the other. They also gave out shirts honoring Bryan.


“It’s amazing,” Canton coach Jackie Thompson said about the support from the community. “I’m just so happy to see all the support for the girls.”


NEB took the first two sets 25-14 and 25-16, but the Warriors battled back in the fourth set for a 25-19 win. The Panthers ended up closing out the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set.


“We’re down a girl right now, we had two of our JV girls play on varsity tonight,” said NEB coach Vanessa Perez. “It’s nice to see that the other girls stepped in and helped with the rotation. We all had to adjust, you get very used to playing with certain girls.”


Toni Herb had a big double-double for NEB with 26 kills and 24 digs, to go with three aces, while Abby O’Connor had 23 kills, five blocks, two digs, and an ace.


Kelsea Moore had 45 assists, five digs, and two aces, as Kiarra DeLancey finished with 49 digs and three aces.


Madalyn Smith stepped in with 13 digs and an ace, while Abby Chobot had seven digs and three kills. Ella Cooley chipped in with four aces, and seven digs.


For Canton Kendall Kitchen had a double-double of 24 digs and 10 points to go with three assists, two kills, and two aces, as teammate MaKenna Seachrist also had a double-double of 10 points and 11 kills, plus four aces, one dig, and one block.


Cailyn VanNoy notched eight points, 11 digs, seven kills, and two aces, with Nevaeh Vroman getting 16 assists, five digs, nine points, and an ace.


Tara Gilbert had eight points, eight kills, nine digs, and three aces, while Addi Pepper had five points, five digs, nine assists, three kills, and an ace.


Danah Wesneski notched six points, five digs, and a kill, as Addy Cardona finished with two kills, and a block.


“We played defense well, for the most part, and we’re learning how to start battling back,” said Thompson. “We get in ruts, and we’ve struggled getting out of those ruts before, and tonight they really focused on that, and limited our serve receive runs. I couldn’t be more proud of them.”


Canton won the JV match 2-1, winning the first set 25-21. NEB took the next 25-19, with Canton eking out a 15-12 win in the third to take the match.


Vroman had seven aces, six digs, two kills, and two assists, with Katie Barry getting two aces, one dig, and an eight assists.


Cardona had five kills with an ace, as Wesneski finished with six kills. Emilia Pepper had five digs, a kill, and an ace, Summar Route notched three aces, with four digs, and Jericka Strozyk finished with three digs, an ace, and an assist.


Ashley Valera chipped in with three aces, and five digs.


NEB (9-0) is off until next week while Canton (2-5) travels to Sayre.
