NTL FOOTBALL: CANTON WELCOMES RED HOT MONTGOMERY (2024-09-20)

Canton (3-1) will host Montgomery (2-2) in a big District IV, Class A tilt between two teams coming off big offensive weeks.

Canton exploded for 51 points in their win over NP-Mansfield last week, a week after going for 42 points in a loss to Athens.

“On offense we need to continue to produce explosive plays, and continue putting a lot of points on the scoreboard,” said Canton coach Tyler Sechrist.

The Red Raiders come in on a 2-game winning streak, including a 28-3 win over Wyalusing last week.

“Montgomery is a good, young team coming off a big win last week,” said Sechrist. “Coach Tice is doing a nice job, and has his young team trending in the right direction.”

After two good defensive outings to start the season the Warriors have struggled on that end.

“Defensively, we need to tighten things up,” said Sechrist. “We have given up too many yards and points the last couple of weeks.”

KEYS TO THE GAME

Montgomery — Slow down Ben Fitch. Whether running or throwing Fitch has been Canton’s biggest playmaker this season. If Montgomery can’t find a way to slow him down it’ll be a long night for the Red Raiders.

Canton — Bring ball carriers down. Against Athens the Wildcats were getting too many yards after contact, which sustains drives. Montgomery has some hard runners that will look to get those hard to 1-2 yards after getting hit to keep their drives alive.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Briar Persing, Montgomery, QB — Persing ran for two touchdowns and threw for one more last week as he had nearly 200 yards of total offense. Like Fitch he can carry a team’s offense.

Aydin Holcomb, Canton, WR — Holcomb had over 100 yards receiving last week and has turned himself into a big play threat. Montgomery had a hard time with Sayre’s athletes on the outside so look for Canton to try and exploit that.
