RUNNER'S WORLD: YOUNG RUNNERS LEAD TOWANDA GIRLS' RESURGENCE (2024-09-25)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportAfter seeing the boys’ team win a league title last year the Towanda girls’ cross-country squad is getting into the act in 2024. So far this season the Black Knights are undefeated with just one week to go as they look for their first league title in over a decade.
Leading the charge is a youth movement with Towanda’s top three runners last year’s state qualifier, sophomore Izzy Larson, and two freshmen in Mary-Kate Eberlin and Kenzie Brown.
“It’s been pretty surprising on how well we’ve been doing as a team, but I had high opes on how well we were going to do,” said Larson. “I knew we were going to come in and be super competitive and tough.”
Eberlin won the junior high girls’ race at the NTL Championships last year with Brown coming in sixth.
“It’s definitely been very exciting,” Eberlin said about the team’s success. “I knew coming into the season that we were going to have a pretty good team, but seeing the outcome of our team has been really great.”
Of course, going from junior high to varsity isn’t easy, beginning with the jump of distance from 1.5 miles to 3.1.
“There’s definitely a lot more pressure team wise,” said Brown. “There’s a lot you can do to make a name for yourself quickly, and I think we definitely have met a lot of those expectations this year.”
Larson likes the fact that she has girls she can run with this year and going forward.
“I’m glad our team has grown,” she remarked. “It’s good to have girls that are in your age group.”
They jumped out strong with a good first invitational, then beat NEB and Athens, their toughest competitors, in the first dual meet of the season.
“It was pretty nervous in the beginning of the year, but after the first race at Cliff Robbins, I was really excited for the races to come,” Eberlin said, then added about the NEB race. “I was pretty excited. I knew it was going to be tough for the first meet going against them.”
Looking ahead to districts things get a lot tougher as they’re competing in the Class AA bracket of District IV, at least for the next two seasons. They feature state powers Danville and Lewisburg, two teams that have had a death grip on the two state qualifying spots coming out of the district.
Still, with more young girls coming up from junior high Towanda sees a window of opportunity down the road.
“I have a very good feeling about how out team’s going to do standing next to the larger schools,” said Larson.
Regardless of what happens it’s an exciting time for Towanda runners.
“We know that we’re going to have good seasons coming up, especially from our seventh and eight graders,” remarked Brown.
