CANTON — It took nearly four minutes of game time for Athens to put the first points on the scoreboard against Canton Wednesday, but once they shook off the cold and the recent downtime, the Lady Wildcats ran off 23 straight points and rolled to a 51-21 win.
Kayleigh Miller provided eight first-quarter points, and hit her second 3-pointer to start the second quarter. During the run, Megan Collins was fouled on a made 3-pointers and hit the free throw to complete the rare four-point play.
A pair of Molly Ward buckets and an Emmie Tymeson trey got Canton on the board in the second quarter, when the Warriors would outscore Athens 14-13.
Five points from Caydence Macik and four more from Miller gave Athens a comfortable 31-14 lead at the break.
The Lady Wildcats doubled up the Warriors in the third quarter, as Miller and Macik were each good for six points, while a pair of Courteney Weiskopft baskets and a score by Aislyn Williams accounted for Canton’s points.
In the final eight minutes, up 43-20, Miller scored four more of her game-high 22 points and the Athen’s defense limited the Lady Warriors to a lone Reagan Kelley free throw, giving them the 51-21 win.
Miller had a game-high 22 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and three assists, and Macik finished with 17 points, as well as four of her team’s 14 steals and five rebounds.
