THE WEEK AHEAD: A BIG WEEK AS WE HEAD INTO OCTOBER (2024-09-29)
Northern Tier Sports ReportThe calendar turns to October but the area sports season continues to heat up. The District IV Golf Championships are this week, big NTL match-ups on the grid-iron, the league champions will be decided in cross-country, and the week kicks off with an important volleyball match-up on Monday.
FOOTBALL
Friday, October 4
Wyalusing (3-3) at Canton (3-3), 7 p.m.: Both teams are coming off tough losses last week where they were shorthanded. The Rams have lost three straight but seemed to have figured some things out against Troy. Canton will be hoping to end a 2-game skid.
Troy (6-0) at Wellsboro (1-5), 7 p.m.: After a hard fought first half Troy pulled away from Wyalusing to stay undefeated, and take control of the top spot in the District IV, Class AA standings. The Hornets lost a thought one at Athens, 21-13.
Saturday, October 5
Towanda (4-2) at Athens (3-3), 7 p.m.: Towanda is coming off a big win over Canton as they look to make a push for a home playoff game down the stretch. Athens kept their playoff hopes alive by surviving a tough game against Wellsboro last week.

Thursday, October 3 & Saturday, October 5
District IV Championships at Williamsport Country Club: The 2-day event will see several area athletes compete to earn a trip to states.
CROSS-COUNTRY
Tuesday, October 1
NEB, NP-Mansfield, Sayre at Wyalusing, 4:30 p.m.: The NTL Small School title will be decided. NEB boys pretty much have their championship locked up, but the girls’ is an open battle between NEB and Wyalusing.
Canton, Troy, Athens at Sullivan County, 4:30 p.m.: The Troy boys will be looking to finish off their NTL Large School title, as they needed a sweep here to clinch it.
Towanda, Wellsboro at CV, 4:30 p.m.: The Towanda girls will be looking to clinch their NTL Large School title with a sweep. It should be a fast individual girls’ race between Towanda’s Izzy Larson and Wellsboro’s Lauren Kosek.
Saturday, October 5
Troy at Chenango Valley Invitational: The Trojans will be headed North of the border to get in one last invite before the NTL Coaches’ Invitational.
VOLLEYBALL
Monday, September 30
Troy (9-1) at NEB (11-0), 6:30 p.m.: A match-up between the two divisional leaders. The Panthers have yet to go to a fifth set, while is on a 9-match winning streak.
Canton (5-5) at Athens (1-6), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors have clawed their way back to .500 with three straight wins, while the Wildcats have lost six straight.
Tuesday, October 1
Troy (9-1) at NP-Liberty (6-3), 7:30 p.m.: The first match-up between the two teams as NPL has won two straight after losing three of four.
Towanda (4-5) at Athens (1-6), 7:30 p.m.: The Knights won the first match 3-0 as they look to get back to .500 in their race for a playoff spot.
NEB (11-0) at Wyalusing (3-7), 7:30 p.m.: After inching towards .500 the Rams have lost three straight, though they did put up a fight in a 3-1 loss at Canton.
Thursday, October 3
Towanda (4-5) at NPL (6-3), 7:30 p.m.: The Knights get their shot at the defending NTL Large School champions in the first of two meetings between them.
NEB (11-0) at Williamson (7-1), 7:30 p.m.: A big Small School match-up. NEB leads the Warriors by one match in the loss column in the divisional title.
Canton (5-5) at CV (4-6), 7:30 p.m.: Canton won the first match-up 3-0, and a win here would go a long way to sealing up the second seed in the District IV, Class A playoffs.
Sayre (0-10) at Wyalusing (3-7), 7:30 p.m.: The Rams will be looking to nab a win to end the week while Sayre has yet to win a set this year.
Saturday, October 5
Canton (5-5), Loyalsock (6-1) at Troy (9-1), 10 a.m.: The three teams will take turns playing each other. The Lancers are currently sitting in third place in the District IV, Class AA standings.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Monday, September 30
Towanda (4-6) at Meadowbrook Christian (5-2), 3 p.m.: The first of a double-header with the boys. The Black Knights are hanging in there as they fight for a playoff spot. Meadowbrook is coming off a 3-2 win over NP-Mansfield.
Tuesday, October 1
NEB (2-10-2) at Wyalusing (5-4-2), 4 p.m.: The Rams have gone 0-4-1 over their last five as they need to pick up some wins to get into the playoffs. This will be the first of NEB’s final four games on the road.
Troy (11-1) at Towanda (4-6), 6 p.m.: The Trojans are riding high off their big win over Shikellamy. This will be the second of four games this week for Towanda.
Thursday, October 3
NEB (2-10-2) at Troy (11-1), 4 p.m.: The Panthers hit the road to Troy, who won 8-0 in their first meeting.
Wellsboro (2-5-2) at Wyalusing (5-4-2), 4 p.m.: Their first meeting in Wellsboro ended in a scoreless tie.
Towanda (4-6) at Northumberland Christian School (0-5-1), 5 p.m.: A good chance for the Knights to pick up a win as they travel down south again.
Saturday, October 5
Williamson (7-5) at Towanda (4-6), 10 a.m.: The Warriors won their first meeting 2-0 as both teams fight for a playoff spot. This will be Towanda’s fourth match in six days.
NEB (2-10-2) at Sullivan County (4-6), 11 a.m.: The Panthers play their third match in five days, all on the road, as they look to get a non-league win.
Wyalusing (5-4-2) at Tunkhannock, 11 a.m.: A win by the Rams against the bigger school would help them move up the playoff standings.
Troy (11-1) at Jersey Shore (2-8), 1 p.m.: The second of a back to back as the boys’ teams play first. After a slow start Jersey Shore has won two of their last three matches.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Monday, September 30
Towanda (5-6) at Meadowbrook Christian (1-3-3), 4:30 p.m.: The night cap of a double-header as the girls’ teams play first. The Knights are coming off a loss to Wellsboro as Meadowbrook has gone 0-2-1 over their last three games.
Wednesday, October 2
Athens (5-4-1) at Towanda (5-6), 4 p.m.: The first match ended 1-0 in Athens’ favor as both teams are battling for the playoffs.
NPL (6-6-1) at Troy (1-13), 4 p.m.: The Trojans are coming off big win over Galeton and will look to avenge a loss from earlier in the season. The Mounties won 6-1 way back in August.
Williamson (9-2-1) at NEB (3-9-1), 4 p.m.: The Panthers face two Tioga County schools at home this week. The Warriors won the first match 8-2.
Friday, October 4
NPL (6-6-1) at NEB (3-9-1), 4 p.m.: The only meeting between the two schools this season, as the Panthers will look to end the season on a high note.
Saturday, October 5
Towanda (5-6) at Galeton (5-8), 10 a.m.: The Knights won the first match 6-0 as they look to make a playoff push.
Troy (1-13) at Jersey Shore (4-7), 11 a.m.: The first of a double-header with the girls to follow. Jersey Shore is 2-3 over their last five matches coming into the week.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Towanda (8-5) at Bucktail (4-2), 4 p.m.: The final regular season match of the season for the Knights. They beat Bucktail 4-1 earlier in the season.
