NTL CROSS-COUNTRY: NEB PACKS THEIR WAY PAST WYALUSING FOR NTL SMALL SCHOOL TITLE (2024-10-02)
Northern Tier Sports ReportWYALUSING — Wyalusing gave the defending NTL Small School champions a scare, but NEB came out on top, 25-30, to claim the league title during NTL action on Tuesday.
The Panthers also defeated NP-Mansfield 15-40, while the Rams won 18-37.
“I was a little nervous as the race unfolded but I’m pleased,” said NEB coach Dillon Lockwood.
Wyalusing jumped out early, at one point running in the top three spots, but the Panthers reeled them in and stuck together.
The Rams took the first and third spots, but NEB came away with the second, fourth, fifth and sixth positions to secure the win.
“We’ve got that nice pack of (Kara) Dughi, (Ruth) Laudermilch), and Sophie (Bennett),” Lockwood said. “I think that really helps us.”
Wyalusing’s Megan King (21:56) won the race, with NEB’s Anaiah Kolesar (22:27) holding on to take second as she nearly collapsed at the end, but had enough to get across.
Wyalusing’s Camryn Gesford (22:39) held off NEB’s Amelia Kapr (22:40) for third.
But then came the Panther pack, with Bennett (22:51), Dughi (22:58), and Laudermilch (23:19) fifth, sixth, and eighth to round out their top five.
Riley Porter (23:04) was seventh for the Rams, Laina Beebe (23:55) came in 10th, and Marci Gowin (24:28) rounded out their top five in 12th.
“We had some really good things happen tonight,” said Wyalusing coach Ellen Coates. “We had some big PRs, so I’m excited to see those improvements. Our number two, three girl did not have a great race, so that hurt us tonight, but it’s going to be a great match-up for NTLs and for districts.”
In the junior high girls’ race NEB’s Julia Laudermilch (12:14) eked out Wyalusing’s Maria Beebe (12:16) for first. Wyalusing beat NEB 24-31, with both teams beating NPM 15-40.
