Athens sophomore Graham Wanck, and Corning junior Olivia Martinec both turned in outstanding performances at the prestigious McQuaid Cross Country Invitational. They are The Sports Reports / Ziff Law Firm Regional “Athletes of the Week,” for the week ending Sept. 28.

ATHENS’ WANCK NAMED ZIFF LAW FIRM REGIONAL BOYS ‘ATHLETE OF THE WEEK’
Wanck began the week Tuesday with a first-place finish in a tri-meet with Wyalusing and Wellsboro, winning the race by 53 seconds.

On Saturday, Wanck finished fifth in a field of 410 runners in the A-1 Small School varsity race. He was 26th overall in the merged results in a field of 2,491 runners.

Honorable Mentions: Towanda’s Riley Vanderpool (football), Edison’s Greg Golden (football), Elmira’s Kayon Flint (football), NP-Liberty / NP-Mansfield Tate Strange (soccer / golf), and Owego’s Vasil Brich (soccer).

CORNING’S MARTINEC NAMED ZIFF LAW FIRM REGIONAL GIRLS ‘ATHLETE OF THE WEEK’
Martinec finished 13th in the Bob Bradley Premier Race at the prestigious McQuaid Invitational with a time of 18:03.7.

Martinec was 18th overall among all runners at the race out of 1,562 runners.

Honorable Mentions: Tioga’s Sophia Haney and Grace Howey (soccer), Canton’s Kendall Kitchen (volleyball), Cowanesque Valley’s Laila Hackett (golf), and Owego’s Ashlyn Dalton (soccer).
