NTL GIRLS' SOCCER: BENNETT'S OT GOAL LIFTS WYALUSING PAST WELLSBORO (2024-10-03)
Northern Tier Sports ReportWYALUSING — Chloe Bennett scored with just over three minutes left in the second overtime to propel Wyalusing to a 1-0 win over Wellsboro during NTL girls’ soccer action Thursday.
Bennett scored off an Emily Fowler assist to avoid their second straight draw with the Hornets this season.
“I’m thinking towards the end there that we’re going to go 200 minutes of soccer and no one’s going to score a goal,” explained Wyalusing coach Gary Haley. “And then Chloe got that one at the end, got a great opportunity, and took advantage of it. I’m really happy, especially for the senior girls on senior night with their parents and grandparents here. It was a really nice win for us in a lot of different ways.”
Wyalusing out shot Wellsboro 12-0 as the Ram defense did a good job keeping the Hornets at bay. They also won the corner kick battle 4-3.
“It’s a great group, but that senior group has been with Mario and I, we coached them in youth together,” Haley said. “They’re just a great group of girls, not just on the soccer field, but off the soccer field. They’re really a great group of girls.”
Story Newell and Aleta O’Connor both got goals in Wyalusing’s JV win over Wellsboro. Callee Warner eared the clean sheet with three saves.
Wyalusing travels to Tunkhannock on Saturday with an 11 a.m. start as they come into the final stretch of their season.
“We’ve been struggling to score the last six or seven games,” said Haley. “We’ve been really working a lot with the girls, talking to them about the mental approach to scoring, and the strategy involved in scoring. We’ve been doing a lot of that in practice, and that’s why, with the Northeast game on Tuesday night, that was the best we played offensively in a while. For us to get a goal tonight, when it was looking like it might end up being another draw, that’s nice, because some of that work we’re doing is paying off. That’s what we keep telling the girls, if we can play like we’re capable of we can compete with a lot of teams.”
