THE WEEK AHEAD: IMPORTANT WEEK FOR NTL, PLAYOFF RACES (2024-10-07)

Northern Tier Sports Report
The calendar says the second week of October, and, along with falling leaves, it’s do or die when it comes to league title races and playoff races for most sports.

FOOTBALL

Friday, October 11

Wellsboro (1-6) at Canton (3-4), 7 p.m.: The Warriors come in on a 3-game skid as they try and get healthy for a playoff push. The Hornets lost to Troy for their second straight L as they hit the road for two weeks.


Troy (7-0) at NP-Mansfield (2-5), 7 p.m.: Save for week two the Trojans haven’t scored less than 40 points this season as they take the Troy train to Island Park. North Penn-Mansfield is coming off two straight non-league losses.


Athens (3-4) at Wyalusing (4-3), 7 p.m.: The Rams got a much needed win at Canton last week as they look to get a few players back from injury. Athens fell to Towanda and need to put a string of wins together to keep their playoff hopes alive.


Saturday, October 12

Towanda (5-2) at Sayre (1-6), 7 p.m.: The Knights have rattled off two straight wins as they appear to finding their groove. This is Sayre’s final home game of the season.


CROSS-COUNTRY

NTL Championships at NEB, 9 a.m.: The league descends on Panther Lane for the Coaches’ Invitational. There will be four races - two varsity and two junior high - plus a kids fun run.


GIRLS’ TENNIS

Tuesday, October 8

Towanda (8-6) at Lewisburg (13-4), 4 p.m.: Towanda will be the lone NTL representative in the District IV Team Championships this week. 


Saturday, October 12

District IV Singles Championships at Williamsport, 9 a.m.: The top players from the district will descend on Williamsport to decide who is the best.


GIRLS’ SOCCER

Monday, October 7

NEB (2-12-2) at Troy (13-1), 4 p.m.: The Trojans are locked in a tight battle for a top three spot in the district playoff seedings with just two weeks to go. As for the NTL , them and Athens are both still undefeated in the league, and play each other back to back in the final week of the season. This is NEB’s second to last game of the year.


Wyalusing (8-4-2) at Sullivan County (6-7), 4 p.m.: A series of wins last week has secured Wyalusing a playoff spot. Now they’ll see how high they can go, and start with Sullivan County, a team battling for their playoff lives.


Wednesday, October 9

Wyalusing (8-4-2) at Troy (13-1), 4 p.m.: The Trojans’ home stand continues as they bring in Wyalusing. The Rams come in on a 3-match winning streak.


NEB (2-12-2) at Towanda (5-8), 6 p.m.: Towanda has three games left and need to win all three if they’re going to make districts. They beat NEB 8-0 in their first meeting over a month ago.


Friday, October 11

Wellsboro (2-7-2) at Towanda (5-8), 5:30 p.m.: A rare Friday night game for the Knights as they try and get one win closer to a district berth. They beat Wellsboro 1-0 in their last meeting.


Saturday, October 12

Holy Cross at Wyalusing (8-4-2), 10 a.m.: The Rams welcome the District II team to finish off a busy week.


BOYS’ SOCCER

Tuesday, October 8

Towanda (7-7) at NPL (10-5-1), 4 p.m.: Towanda’s playoff chances are hanging on a knife’s edge as they need to win at least two of their final four games. NPL edged them in their first meeting, a game Towanda would like to have back.


Troy (1-15) at Williamson (10-4-1), 4 p.m.: Troy finishes up their season this week, first up a road match at Williamson. The Warriors come in 1-2 in their last three.


NEB (3-11-1) at Wellsboro (12-2), 5:30 p.m.: NEB is coming off a tough loss to NPL as they make the long trip out west. The Hornets have won four straight coming into this week.


Thursday, October 10

Towanda (7-7) at Troy (1-15), 4 p.m.: The Knights won the first match 2-1 and this is a good opportunity to pick up one of the two wins they need. Troy will be looking to play spoiler in their season finale.


Galeton (5-10) at NEB (3-11-1), 4 p.m.: The final home game of the season for the Panthers as they look to avenge a loss from earlier in the season to Galeton.


Saturday, October 12

Montrose at Towanda (7-7), 1 p.m.: The Black Knights’ home finale as they look to possibly clinch a playoff spot.


VOLLEYBALL

Monday, October 7

Canton (7-7) at South Williamsport (8-3), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors are coming off back to back losses from a Saturday double-header and hit the road for the fifth straight time to take on the defending District IV, Class A champions.


Tuesday, October 8

Towanda (4-7) at Canton (7-7), 7:30 p.m.: It’s been a rough stretch for the Black Knights, going 1-4 in their last five. They’ll need to start getting some wins if they’re going to make districts. Canton looks set to take the second seed in Class A.


Troy (12-2) at Sayre (0-11), 7:30 p.m.: Troy suffered their second league loss against NEB last week, putting them one game back of Wellsboro in the loss column for the NTL Large School title. Sayre is still searching for their first win.


Wellsboro (11-3) at NEB (14-0), 7:30 p.m.: The Trojans will be cheering for NEB to take down Wellsboro, as the Hornets will be looking to get a win to make up for their loss against Troy. NEB has yet to play more than four sets this season.


Wyalusing (4-8) at Williamson (8-2), 7:30 p.m.: The Rams are coming off a sweep of Sayre that ended a 4-match losing streak. Williamson is coming off a loss to NEB, falling two matches behind in the divisional standings.


Thursday, October 10

NEB (14-0) at Athens (2-8), 7:30 p.m.: The Panthers will be looking to stay undefeated while the Wildcats need to get some wins in order to stay in the playoff chase for Class 3A.


Sayre (0-11) at Towanda (4-7), 7:30 p.m.: After three matches on the road the Knights return home to take on Sayre in a cross-divisional contest.


Wyalusing (4-8) at Troy (12-2), 7:30 p.m.: This starts a crucial home stand for the Trojans as they have four matches in a row at home - Wyalusing, NPL, Wellsboro, and NEB. They’ll need to win the next three to secure a divisional title.


Saturday, October 12

Hughesville (4-9) at Towanda (4-7), noon: The first of two meetings between these two teams. This will be a good win opportunity for Towanda.


NEB (14-0) at Lewisburg (3-10), 1 p.m.: The Panthers take the long road trip down south for a non-league contest.
