NTL FOOTBALL: TOWANDA ROLLS PAST SAYRE (2024-10-13)

Northern Tier Sports Report
SAYRE — Towanda took care of business on Saturday, rolling to a 56-14 win over Sayre during NTL football action.

They had over 400 yards of offense on the day as they led 40-0 at the half.

“I thought we came out and  we did exactly what we wanted to do,” said Towanda coach Jamie Wecker. “The kids played well. I thought we played clean, a lot cleaner game. We avoided the dumb mistakes that kill drives, we had some but nothing like we did the last couple of weeks, and it got to a point where I was happy that we could get some of the guys who don’t get as much playing time in, and that was really important for us, for now and for the future.”

Riley Vanderpool had 111-yards rushing and two touchdowns on six carries, while throwing for 92-yards on 6-for-10 with a score.

Reese Sluyter was 2-for-3 for 51-yards with a score and a pick, while Caden Delamater had four carries for 59-yards and touchdown.

Rylee Sluyter had three touchdowns on the day - rushing, receiving, and a pick six - as Tanner Vanderpool and Reese Sluyter also had scores.

Defensively they held Sayre to under 50 rushing yards, keeping their athletes in check.

“That’s one thing we talked about, regardless of who the competition is, we compete against ourselves first,” Wecker said. “Everybody has to do that, and I thought we played well.”

Rylee Sluyter opened up the scoring with a 41-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Jack Wheaton’s kick was good for a 7-0 lead.

Riley Vanderpool then got into the action with an 85-yard scoring run to make it 13-0.

Then, to end the quarter, the two Rileys hooked up, with Vanderpool hitting Sluyter with a 16-yard pass play that hit pay dirt. Wheaton’s kick was good for a 20-0 lead.

Delamater opened the second quarter scoring with a 38-yard touchdown run. That was followed by Rylee Sluyter’s 72-yard pick six, as Wheaton hit the point after to make it 33-0.

The Knights then made sure the game got into the mercy rule as Vanderpool punched one in from 5-yards out to make it 40-0 after the Wheaton kick.

Riley Johnson got Sayre on the scoreboard early in the third with a 1-yard touchdown run.

Towanda answered as the Rileys/Rylees younger siblings got in on the act, with Reese hitting Tanner for a 47-yard pass play.

Gage Evans ran in the 2-point conversion for the 48-6 lead.

In the fourth Karter Green hit Nick Pellicano for a 7-yard scoring strike. Sayre added the 2-point conversion to make it 48-14.

Reese Sluyter had the final say in the game, running one in from 7-yards out for the 54-14 final.

Towanda (6-2) has moved into the second spot in the district standings right behind Troy, and will have a good chance to keep next week with a win since they’ll be at Class 4A Tunkhannock.

“We want more consistency, always,” Wecker said. “Staying with blocks, it’s fundamentals. As we get here to the end of the season I think we’re getting there, I think we’re starting to peak, and that’s what, as a coach, you want your team to start peaking at the end. I think we’re getting there, there are still things to focus on, but just take care of business, showing up and taking the game when the opportunities arise.”
