THE WEEK AHEAD: VOLLEYBALL, GIRLS' SOCCER COULD DECIDE LEAGUE CHAMPS THIS WEEK (2024-10-13)

Northern Tier Sports Report
A little bit lighter week as the soccer regular season winds down, but volleyball is just picking up as NTL races come down to the final stretch.

FOOTBALL

Friday, October 18

Hughesville (4-4) at Wyalusing (4-4), 7 p.m.: A game with huge playoff implications in Class AA. A loss by the Rams would be detrimental to their chances at the postseason, while a win could move them as high as sixth. The Spartans currently are sixth and are coming off a big 32-29 win over Warrior Run.

Troy (8-0) at Central Mountain (0-8), 7 p.m.: The opposite ends of how a season is going. The Trojans will look to keep things rolling as they face the Class 4A team looking for their first win of the season.

Towanda (6-2) at Tunkhannock (3-5), 7 p.m.: Towanda is riding high, both on the field and in the District IV, Class AA standings. They’ll take on a Tunkhannock team that has won two of their last three.

Sayre (1-7) at Canton (4-4), 7 p.m.: The Warriors got a much needed win against Wellsboro last week as they host Sayre in their home finale. Sayre has lost two straight.

VOLLEYBALL

Tuesday, October 15

NP-Liberty (8-6) at Troy (14-2), 7:30 p.m.: Troy and Wellsboro have one league loss each as we head into the final week-and-a-half of the regular season. Before Troy takes on Wellsboro they get NPL, who is battling for playoff positioning.

Towanda (7-7) at Wyalusing (4-10), 7:30 p.m.: The Knights have won three straight to get back into the playoff picture. They have five matches left, three of them against teams with winning records, so a win here is crucial for getting into the postseason.

Athens (2-9) at Canton (8-8), 7:30 p.m.: Canton won a non-league match against the Wildcats, 3-2, earlier in the season up in the Valley.

NEB (16-1) at CV (4-9), 7:30 p.m.: The Panthers take the long trip to Westfield before hosting Williamson on Thursday which will likely decide the NTL Small School title.

Thursday, October 17

Wellsboro (13-3) at Troy (14-2), 7:30 p.m.: The match that will likely decide the NTL Large School champion. Troy won the first meeting 3-0 but the Hornets are coming off a 3-2 win over NEB.

NP-Liberty (8-6) at Towanda (7-7), 7:30 p.m.: Towanda lost the first meeting 3-0 but an upset here would go a long ways towards ensuing them a spot in the postseason.

Williamson (10-2) at NEB (16-1), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors have two league losses, the Panthers one, likely meaning, if both teams on Tuesday - a big if for Williamson as they have Wellsboro - this match could be the clincher for the Panthers.

Sayre (0-12) at Canton (8-8), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors will be looking for the season sweep of Sayre, while Sayre is looking for their first win.

Lewisburg (3-13) at Wyalusing (4-10), 7 p.m.: The Rams have done well in non-league matches, sitting 2-0 against teams outside the NTL.

Saturday, October 19

Wyalusing at Loyalsock w/Sugar Valley Rural Charter, 11:30 p.m.: A double bill for the Rams who can look to stay undefeated in non-league action.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Monday, October 14

Athens (10-5) at Troy (15-1), 4 p.m.: The Trojans can wrap up another league title with a win in their home finale. The Trojans are also battling for playoff positioning, currently sitting in second place for the district standings. Athens is coming off their third straight loss.

Tuesday, October 15

Milton (13-1-2) at Towanda (6-9), 6 p.m.: The Knights will wrap up their season at home against a tough Tigers squad.

Wednesday, October 16

Williamson (9-5) at Wyalusing (10-5-2), 4 p.m.: The season finale for the Rams, who’v gone 5-1 over their last six matches. A win here could move them up a spot, or a loss drop them a spot. The Warriors are riding high off a win over Athens, and won the first meeting 2-0.

Troy (15-1) at Athens (10-4), 5:30 p.m.: The regular season finale for Troy, and home finale for Athens. If Athens gets the upset on Monday this will be the winner-take-all for the league title.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Tuesday, October 15

Towanda (8-9) at Shamokin (4-12), 5 p.m.: It all comes down to this for the Knights if they’re going to qualify for district play. A win and they’re in, a loss and they’re done. Shamokin beat Southern Columbia, who defeated Towanda, but both teams have losses to Montgomery, with Towanda’s the better effort.

Friday, October 18

NEB (4-12-1) at Blue Ridge, 4 p.m.: The Panthers wrap up their season with a road trip to Susquehanna County. They’ll be looking to end things on a high note.
