NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: WYALUSING NOTCHES WINS OVER CANTON, NP-M ON SAME DAY (20 PHOTOS) (2021-02-20)

Northern Tier Sports Report
MANSFIELD — Wyalusing pulled off a rare feat for a high school girls basketball team — winning two games in one day.

The Lady Rams opened the day with a 40-23 win at Canton, then finished it off at night with a 52-35 win at Mansfield.

At Mansfield, it took the Lady Rams one quarter to get their legs back under them in its second game of the day, but once they did, they rolled to a 52-35 win over North Penn-Mansfield.

Sarah Spohn and Shaniya Chapel scored five points apiece, and Ashley Brubaker added four points to help NP-M to a 14-11 lead after the first eight minutes.

In the second quarter, the Wyalusing defense put the clamps on the Lady Tigers, and Hailey Jayne scored six points to fuel an 11-4 run that put the Lady Rams up 22-18 at the half.

Callie Bennett knocked down a 3-pointer and scored seven points in the third quarter as Wyalusing outscored NP-M, 12-7, to up its lead to 34-25 entering the final eight minutes.

Catherine Brown scored five points in the fourth quarter, while Jayne added four, and Bennett canned a 3-pointer in an 18-8 run that put the game away.

Bennett and Jayne scored 14 points apiece to lead Wyalusing, while Brown added 12, and Olivia Leichliter chipped in with six.

Spohn led NP-M with 11 points, while Brubaker had six, and Chapel chipped in with five.

Wyalusing 40, Canton 23
At Canton, Wyalusing nearly doubled Canton up in every quarter, and Madison Putnam scored 18 points to lead the Lady Rams to a 40-23 win Saturday afternoon.

Catherine Brown collected five of her seven points from the line, and the Rams hit 13 of 20 as a team, compared to the Warriors making just 2 of 4 from the charity stripe.

Callie Bennett scored six points for Wyalusing, while Olivia Leichleiter had five points, and Laci Norton added four points.

After Wyalusing built an 8-4 first-quarter lead, the Warriors chipped away, closing the gap to 10-8 early in the second quarter on buckets by Aislyn Williams and Molly Ward.

The Rams then went on an 8-0 run, sparked by a Putnam 3-pointer, and extended their lead to 20-10 at the break.

In the third quarter, the Rams’ defense held Canton to just four points, while posting 10 of their own.

Entering the final eight minutes up 30-14, Norton would score all four of her points. Putnam added four, and the stingy Wyalusing D limited Canton to just five points, until a nearly-half-court 3-pointer at the buzzer by Alexis Baldwin provided the final margin.

The wins leave Wyalusing with a 9-4 record on the year, and in the middle of the eight-team District 4 AA playoff.

Canton drops to 4-9 on the year, and is on the outside looking in at the playoffs.
