NTL FOOTBALL: TOWANDA TRAVELS TO TUNKHANNOCK TO DEFEND THE T-BONE (2024-10-17)

Northern Tier Sports Report
Towanda (6-2) will hit the road once again as they travel to Tunkhannock (3-5) for a Friday night tilt with a 7 p.m. kick-off.

“Tunkhannock presents a challenge to prepare for,” said Towanda coach Jamie Wecker. “They run a bunch of different formations, and they employ a 2-QB system. One is more of a runner, and the other can throw the ball pretty well. So, we have to prepare for both offensive schemes. They have good athletes and will try to spread our defense out. Defensively, the have good speed and fly to the ball. We will need to be disciplined and physical to be successful.”

The Tigers come in winners in two of their last three games, beating Montrose (31-0) last week.

They boast two players with over 200 yards rushing coming into the game.

“Like always, we need to be gap sound, take good angles and be physical,” Wecker said. “Also, mentally we have to be prepared for all of the looks they are going to give us.”

As they head into the final stretches of the regular season Towanda will be battling for the second seed in the district playoffs, which they currently hold.

“I would like us to just keep improving with our fundamentals,” said Wecker. “I think we’ve continued to improve all season, and in particular, these last few weeks. So, I just hope we continue to become a better football team in all areas.”

KEYS TO THE GAME

Towanda — Don’t get caught off guard. Towanda has been stout defensively during their 3-game win streak and they’ll need that to continue into this week as they face a versatile Tunkhannock team.

Tunkhannock — As always, slow down Riley Vanderpool. If they can slow down Vanderpool, they’ll give themselves a shot at the win. If they let him run wild, it’ll be a long night for the Tigers.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Zack Latwinski, Tunkhannock, QB — Latwinski has thrown for 441-yards this season on 34-for-82 with two touchdowns, and five interceptions. He threw for over 100 yards and a score in their win against Montrose last week.

Edan Flynn, Towanda, DL — Flynn comes in with 44 tackles on the season, eight for loss. They’ll be looking for him to have a big game this week to slow down Tunkhannock’s offense.
