NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: MONSTER FIRST QUARTER PROPELS NP-LIBERTY TO 70-45 WIN OVER WYALUSING (2021-02-20)
Northern Tier Sports ReportLIBERTY — A slow start was more than Wyalusing could overcome in a 70-45 loss to North Penn-Liberty here Saturday in NTL Large School boys basketball action.
The Mounties — on the back of outstanding defense, and six first-quarter 3-pointers — raced out to a 32-6 lead after the first eight minutes.
The Rams would outscore the Mounties 39-38 the rest of the way, but could not cut into the huge lead.
NP-Liberty’s defense only allowed one Ram into double-figures, as Greydon Cobb led Wyalusing with 10 points — all in the second half.
Mitchell Burke scored nine points, while Isiah Way added eight and Nolan Oswald had seven points. Abram Bennett finished with five points, and Kashawn Cameron, Blake Morningstar and Lucas Milne had two points apiece.
The Rams shot a respectable 9-for-11 from the free-throw line, but NP-Liberty countered by hitting 20 of 30 from the charity stripe, and made eight treys to Wyalusing’s four.
The Mounties were led by Brandon Thompson’s 20 points and Noah Spencer’s 18. Spencer also handed out seven assists, and Thompson grabbed six rebounds.
Koleton Roupp scored 12 points, on four 3-pointers, and Colton Litzelman added nine points, six boards and three assists. Derek Litzelman finished with six points, while Hunter Thompson and Kevin Alexander each scored two points. Kyle Davis rounded out the Mountie scoring with one point.
The Rams outscored NP-Liberty in the second quarter, 15-14, as Bennett and Oswald scored five apiece.
After the break, and down 46-21, the Mounties defense again limited the Rams, holding them to buckets by Burke, Cameron and Cobb, and a pair of free throws by Oswald.
The fourth quarter was the Ram’s most productive, on the back of Cobb’s eight points and four each for Way and Burke. But the Mounties got six apiece from Spencer and Derek Litzelman, and cruised to the 70-45 win.
With the win, NP-Liberty tightened their grasp on the Division 2 lead at 10-1, with Wyalusing sitting in second place at 8-4.
The Rams will travel to Cowanesque on Monday.
