THE WEEK AHEAD: POSTSEASON STARTS FOR MULTIPLE SPORTS, PLUS RIVALRY WEEK (2024-10-20)

Northern Tier Sports Report
Its one of the most exciting weeks of the Fall sports season - rivalry week for football, and districts for soccer, cross-country, and volleyball.

FOOTBALL

Friday, October 25

Canton (5-4) at Troy (9-0), 7 p.m.: Troy won the back the Old Shoe last year and look to keep it at Alparon Park this season. Both teams are pretty much locked into their playoff seeds at this point - Troy at one, Canton at four - but the NTL title will be on the line.

Wyalusing (4-5) at Towanda (7-2), 7 p.m.: Towanda will be looking to take back the Bronze Helmet as playoff implications are on the line for both teams. Wyalusing likely needs a win here to get in, but a victory could push them up to seven - they’re currently ninth. A win by the Knights guarantees them the second seed, a loss open the doors for Loyalsock or SCA to leap frog them.

GOLF

Monday, October 21 - Tuesday, October 22

PIAA Championships at Blue & White Course: Canton’s Izzie Schoonover, Towanda’s Owen Savercool, and three other NTL golfers will try their luck with some of the of state’s best.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Thursday, October 24

District IV Championships at Bloomsburg University, 9:30 a.m.: The fun starts at 9:30 a.m. with the Class A girls’ race, with the other races 45 minutes after in the order of Class AA girls, Class A boys, and Class AA boys.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Tuesday, October 22

Meadowbrook Christian at Wyalusing, 4 p.m.: The Rams host a 10-7 match-up in the District IV, Class A playoffs. They missed each other at the Meadowbrook Tournament, but MC has wins over NEB (2-0), and NP-Mansfield (3-2) with losses to Towanda (4-0), and Sullivan County (4-3) in common opponents. The winner plays Muncy on Saturday at noon at Milton.

Wednesday, October 23

Williamson vs Troy at Towanda, 6 p.m.: A rare close to home playoff game for the Trojans in a 7-2 match-up. Troy won both games this season, but the second was a tight 2-0 score. The winner plays the winner of Montoursville-Hughesville the following Monday at place and time to be determined.

VOLLEYBALL

Monday, October 21

Towanda (7-9) at Hughesville (6-10), 7 p.m.: The Knights need to win all three matches this week to get into the district playoffs. They start with a Hughesville team that had a big win over Wyalusing this weekend.

Tuesday, October 22

NEB (17-2) at Troy (16-2), 7:30 p.m.: A win by the Trojans will clinch the NTL Large School title for them. NEB won the first match-up 3-1 at their place.

Canton (10-8) at Wyalusing (6-12), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors have won two straight as they solidify the second seed in the District IV, Class A volleyball playoffs. Wyalusing is coming off a pair of tough losses over the weekend.

Wellsboro (14-4) at Towanda (7-9), 7:30 p.m.: A tough match-up for the Knights but they get the Hornets at home. They lost to Wellsboro 3-0 in their first meeting.

Thursday, October 24

Towanda (7-9) at NEB (17-2), 7:30 p.m.: The regular season finale for each. The Panthers are set with the top spot in the District IV, Class A playoffs, while, if Towanda wins the first two matches this week, will be playing for their postseason lives on Thursday.

Troy (16-2) at CV (5-11), 7:30 p.m.: If Troy loses to NEB then they have a shot to clinch the title with a win at CV - they have the tiebreaker by winning the season series against Wellsboro.

Canton (10-8) at NPL (8-7), 7:30 p.m.: The Mounties have fallen all the way to sixth in the district standings, and a bad week this week could see them fall out of the playoffs. This would be a good momentum win for Canton just before the postseason.

Wyalusing (6-12) at Sayre (0-13), 7:30 p.m.: Wyalusing won the first match-up, and will be looking to end the season on a high note with a win.

Saturday, October 26

District Playoffs at Athens: The Class A and Class AAA semifinals will be on this day, so it looks like it will be NEB-Galeton, and Canton-CV in Class A, and Shamokin-Midd-West and Danville-Athens in Class AAA. Class AA quarterfinals will be this day, if necessary.
