THE WEEK AHEAD: STATE CROSS-COUNTRY, DISTRICTS FOR FOOTBALL, VOLLEYBALL, AND GIRLS' SOCCER HIGHLIGHT THIS WEEK (2024-10-27)

Northern Tier Sports Report
A week of championships with state cross-country, along with district girls’ soccer and volleyball, while football playoffs kick-off.

FOOTBALL

Friday, November 1

Bloomsburg (5-5) at Towanda (8-2), 7 p.m.: The second seeded Knights will host Bloomsburg in the opening round of the District IV, Class AA playoffs. Towanda comes into the postseason winners of five straight after a 3-2 start. Bloomsburg is 4-1 after a 1-4 start to the season. Their one common opponent was Hughesville, whom they beat 39-7, while Towanda lost 42-6 way back in week two.


South Williamsport (5-5) at Troy (10-0), 7 p.m.: Troy won the first meeting, 43-7, way back in week three, with their offense averaging 57.3 points over the last four games. South snuck in thanks to a win in their season finale over Northwest 21-0.


Saturday, November 2

Canton (5-5) at Muncy (8-2), 7 p.m.: After a tough middle patch of the season that saw them go 0-3, the Warriors went 2-1 over their final three contests. Muncy opened and closed the season with losses, falling to Hughesville (28-27) in their season finale. In common opponents Muncy has wins over Athens and Montgomery, two teams Canton lost to.


CROSS-COUNTRY

Saturday, November 2

PIAA Championships at Hershey, 9:30 a.m.: 14 individuals and one team (NEB boys) will be competing amongst the state’s best on Saturday morning. NEB’s Creed Dewing will be going for his fourth state medal while many other runners will be going after their first.


GIRLS’ SOCCER

Monday, October 28

Troy vs Hughesville at Loyalsock, 6 p.m.: After a close game in the quarters the Trojans have to take a trip to the Spartans’ backyard. Hughesville beat Montoursville 1-0 in the quarterfinals to get here, the same score that Troy beat the Warriors by early in the season. In other common opponents Hughesville beat Wellsboro 4-0, Muncy 5-1, Shikellamy 3-2, and Williamson 1-0. Troy recently defeated Williamson 4-0 in the quarters.


VOLLEYBALL

Monday, October 28

Canton vs CV at Athens, 6 p.m.: The first two on Monday for the Class A semifinals. The Warriors swept CV during the regular season, and come in 3-1 in their last four contests. CV rolls in losers of two straight. The winner plays in the title match on Thursday at 6 p.m. back at Athens.


Galeton vs NEB at Athens, 8 p.m.: The top seeded Panthers will face off with Galeton in the second match of the Class A semifinals. NEB comes in 2-2 over their last four contests, including a loss at CV. Galeton fell to CV twice, 3-2 and 3-1. The winner plays in the title match on Thursday at 6 p.m. back at Athens.


Tuesday, October 29

Williamson vs Troy at Athens, 8 p.m.: One half of the Class AA semifinals, following Wellsboro and Loyalsock at 6 p.m. Williamson defeated NPL 3-1 in the quarters, and gave Troy their only league loss all the way back in August. Troy comes in on a 9-match win streak. The winner plays in the title match on Thursday at 8 p.m. back at Athens.
