NTL FOOTBALL: CANTON GETS SET TO RENEW RIVALRY WITH MUNCY SATURDAY NIGHT (2024-11-01)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportCanton (5-5) will renew their rivalry with Muncy (8-2) as they head down there for a Saturday 7 p.m. kick-off in the semi-finals of the District IV, Class A playoffs.
The two teams know each other well in the playoffs, as they were district finals opponents for a period of five straight years recently.
“Muncy is a solid, well rounded football team,” said Canton coach Tyler Sechrist.
The Indians feature power back Austin Johnson, along with plenty of complimentary weapons.
“On the defensive side of the ball we will need to limit their explosive plays and tackle low,” Sechrist said.
Canton features several of their own athletes in Ben Fitch, Holden Ward, Aydin Holcomb, and Bailey Gardner that Muncy will have to account for.
“Offensively, we will need to get the ball to our athletes in space,” said Sechrist.
KEYS TO THE GAME
Canton — Pull out all the stops on offense. With nothing to lose, and everything to gain, the Warriors should do whatever it takes to get their athletes the ball with green in front of them. It’s their one advantage in the match-up.
Muncy — Pound and ground. Canton has struggled stopping the run this year, and Johnson is one of the best backs in the league. Running the ball also runs clock, giving Canton limited possessions in a game that could be a shootout.
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Aydin Holcomb, Canton, WR — A possible X-factor as Muncy will have to account for Fitch and Ward out of the backfield first. Holcomb will likely need to have a big day for Canton to pull off the upset.
Landyn Wommer, Muncy, RB — Johnson will get his, but if Wommer, who had 136-yards rushing in last week’s loss to Hughesville, goes off as well, it could be a long night for the Indians. How he fares may determine the game.
