NTL CROSS-COUNTRY: CANTON'S HALBFOERSTER COMES UP JUST SHORT OF THE MEDALS (2024-11-03)

HERSHEY — Canton’s Lawrence Halbfoerster came away with a top 40 finish at the PIAA Cross-country Championships on Saturday. The junior was 37th with a time of 17:41.

“I felt good where I ended,” Halbfoerster said. “I didn’t get 25th, which is what I wanted, but those hills really kill you.”

Halbfoerster was 49th 800 meters in, but got to 36th at the mile. He slowly worked his way up to 26th at the 2-mile, but began to fade, falling to 33rd with 1,000 meters to go.

“All your brain is telling you to slow down, you can’t do it anymore,” he remarked. “You decide to keep on pushing.”

For much of the middle portion of the race the final medals spot was in a pack just a few seconds ahead of him.

“That’s where I needed to be,” said Halbfoerster.

Down the stretch, though, he had run out of gas, possibly due to fighting off an illness this week.

“I’m going to work really hard to put in a lot more miles this winter and in the summer, and had a good track season,” Halbfoerster remarked. “Hopefully I’ll medal next year.”
