NTL FOOTBALL: CANTON DROPS PLAYOFF CONTEST AT MUNCY (2024-11-03)
Northern Tier Sports ReportMUNCY — Canton couldn’t slow down Muncy’s offense as they fell 56-14 in the District IV, Class A football semifinals Saturday.
The Indians had nearly 400 yards of total offense, 325 of that on the ground.
“I mean, I love these seniors,” said Canton coach Tyler Sechrist. “They’ve done a lot for us. They’ve laid it on the line, and it’s hard to see it end this way for them - our numbers were down, we got guys banged up, and, against a team like Muncy, who’s really firing on all cylinders, have a lot of seniors, have a lot of motivation to win a district championship, and try to get their first district championship for that group. I can see that they’re really motivated. I thought we played well, physical, and we weren’t able to with stand it.”
It was a back and forth first quarter with Muncy taking a 7-0 lead on a Landyn Wommer 30-yard run with 9:23 on the clock.
Canton answered as Ben Fitch hit Holden Ward for a 40-yard scoring strike. Alexis McRoberts tied it up with 5:59 on the clock.
The Indians then proceeded to score 49 straight points, 28 of them in the second quarter, to pull away.
Austin Johnson had a 3-yard touchdown run to end the first quarter, then had a 2-yard run in the second, and a 1-yard run in the third. He also had a 40-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.
Stiles Eyer added a 10-yard run, while also hitting Gavin Burrows for a 21-yard scoring strike late in the second quarter. Wommer would add a 6-yard touchdown run early in the fourth.
Canton’s final score came with 7:23 left in the game as Fitch ran it in from seven yards out, with McRoberts hitting the extra point for the 56-14 final.
“We were moving the ball there early, I was happy,” Sechrist said. “We were hanging, we were fighting defensively, but we couldn’t stop anything. The tackling was poor, and Johnson, even on a good tackling day, he goes down hard, but I was happy with the way our offense came out, and we kind of battled there at the beginning.”
Canton did run for 134-yards on the night as Bailey Gardner had eight carries for 63-yards. Through the air Fitch was 5-for-11 for 93-yards with the touchdown, as Aydin Holcomb had five catches for 57-yards.
Johnson had 146-yards rushing on 17 carries, while Wommer added 121-yards on eight touches. Eyer was efficient in the pocket, going 3-for-3 for 74-yards.
Despite how the season ended Sechrist felt this team did what they could this year with all the adversity they faced.
“It was a great year,” he said. “If you look at what we did, and people were starting to write us off, and we had a really good run, and it was enjoyable, and that makes it even harder when you start to lose. We just know now we’ve got to get back to work.”
