NTL GIRLS' SOCCER: NEB BATTLES THROUGH REBUILDING YEAR (2024-11-04)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportIt was a season of transition for the NEB girls’ soccer team as they welcomed in a new coach in Joel Howland, along with seeing many new faces on the field.
“The season came and went in what seemed to be short fashion,” said Howland. “We were in every game, just couldn't seem to put it all together. Losing Katrina Russell hurt, but thankfully she's on the mend now and will be back for next year. Basketball will welcome her back next year, too.”
NEB went 2-14-2 on the year, though they were better than their record indications. They had one of the tougher schedules with an opponent’s winning percentage above. 500 as they swept NP-Mansfield on the year.
They had scoreless draws with Wellsboro and playoff bound Wyalusing with six other contests decided by two goals or less, including a strong 1-0 loss at Athens.
“We will be losing six seniors, six seniors who were a big part of our team,” Howland said. “Having girls like Makenna Callear, Hannah Berger, and Becca VanDeMark come back for their senior year meant a lot. Seeing a new face in Lilah Hughes was great as well, her work ethic and will to learn was incredible.”
The toughest loss will be defensive midfield Lillie Maynard, a 4-year stalwart for the Panthers.
“Trying to fill Lillie Maynards shoes next year will be very challenging,” remarked Howland. “She is such a leader and a dominate player. I'm going to miss her but wish her nothing but the best in basketball and as she steps off into college.”
The Panthers also return a few key players who will likely see their roles change in 2025.
“We will be rebuilding next year,” said Howland. “We still have some awesome talent on the team with girls like Mallorie Maynard, MacKenzie Clark, and Jocey Brown, just to name a few. Plus, I get one more year with Leah Beebe. She is a Rockstar in that goal and keeps us literally in every game. One of the best keepers in the NTL, possibly the district! Our freshman this year stepped up when they had too, as well. They got to play with some great talent from Milton to Troy.”
Howland is bullish that they’ll make improvements come next season.
“Fall of 2025, we will see you soon!,” he said.
