NTL CROSS-COUNTRY: TOWANDA GIRLS HAVE A CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON (2024-11-06)

It was a championship season for Towanda girls’ cross-country in 2024, while the boys’ team had another strong season, even if they did come up just short of their goal of being repeat NTL champions.

“I’m very pleased with the way our team has grown and continues to grow,” said Towanda coach Mike Maurer. “A lot of key members are set to return next year. Going to miss our outgoing seniors who really help build up the program since their 7th grade year.”

Led by state qualifier Izzy Larson, the Lady Knights went undefeated in NTL dual meets, won the NTL Coaches’ Invitational, and took third in the always tough District IV, Class AA Girls’ Championship race.

Larson took fourth at the District IV Championships, and just missed a state medal with a 30th place finish at the PIAA Championships.

The sophomore was joined by standout freshmen Kenzie Brown and Mary-Kate Eberlin, along with sophomores Leila Cobb and Angie Tavani. Seniors Dixie Brown and Hannah Pretty rounded out their top seven.

The boys’ team lost a tough to Troy during the NTL Dual Meet season, upending their chances at another Large School title, but they did beat them at the NTL Championships (second place) and the District IV, Class AA Championships (fourth place).

Freshman Boom Thompson was leading the team by the end of the season, just missing a state berth at districts by three spots, as he finished 19th.

Seniors Jack Tavani and Jacob Carr led the way, as another freshman, Hagen Jones, filled out a strong top four.

Rounding out their top seven were sophomore Jackson Frederick, senior Wyatt Stranger, and freshman Quentin Little.

Looking ahead both teams have bright futures. For the second year in a row the top two junior high runners in the NTL were Knights as the girls hope to be more competitive with Lewisburg (second in the state) and Danville (third in the state) next year at districts.

The boys say good-bye to two stalwarts, but won the NTL junior high boys’ meet, so they are set up well for the foreseeable future.
