NTL CROSS-COUNTRY: CANTON BOYS POST A REBOUND SEASON (2024-11-10)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportCanton had a solid boys’ cross-country season in 2024, finishing the year second in NTL Small School standings and seeing Lawrence Halbfoerster come up just short of a state medal.
“I was really happy with how the kids responded throughout the season, and they were such a joy to coach,” said Canton coach Casey Aylesworth. “We had a team of individuals who wanted to be there every day, and it made practice enjoyable and fun group to coach. I thought our season was a really important step for our program. Our guys became competitive again throughout the league, we finished second in District 4 A race.”
The Warriors were fifth at the NTL Coaches’ Invitational, with Halbfoerster taking sixth overall.
In Class A race Halbfoerster took fourth to punch his ticket to states, while his brother, Manuel Halbfoerster, was 14th.
At states Lawrence was 37th, a big improvement from 2023.
Both Lawrence and Manuel return along with number three runner Landon Lake, and Nick Weaver.
“Lawrence did a great job of leading the boys in both competition and practice, and it paid off by sending him to the states for the second consecutive year,” Aylesworth remarked. “My hope is this has created a hunger in the returning athletes, and hopefully we can compete a little better at districts next year, and Lawrence can chase after a state medal his senior year.”
