NTL VOLLEYBALL: TROY HAS BANNER RAISING YEAR IN 2024 (2024-11-17)
BY CHRIS MANNINGNorthern Tier Sports ReportIt was a season a decade in the making for Troy volleyball as they claimed their first NTL Large School title in 10 years, and came up just a few points short of a district title.
“This year the girls came in ready for whatever I asked of them,” said coach Abby Herman. “I could tell from the first practice that the girls were hungry to win and would do everything I asked to get their team where we needed to be. This season may not have ended with a District win how we wanted but the girls ended up as NTL champs for the first time in 10 years. For this program to change so much in the little time I have been here, I give all the credit to the girls. Its on them for how they want things to go for Troy volleyball and this year showed what we can do with a good attitude and great effort.”
Troy went 18-2 in the regular season, losing their season opener to Williamson (3-0) but winning nine straight after that: Athens (3-0), Towanda (3-0), Williamsport (3-2), Canton (3-0), Danville (3-0), Wellsboro (3-0), Towanda (3-0), Lewisburg (3-0), and Athens (3-0).
A loss to NEB (3-1) ended that streak, but they quickly started another one with nine straight wins to end the regular season.
They swept NPL (3-1, 3-0), defeated Canton (3-0), Loyalsock (3-1), Sayre (3-0), Wyalusing (3-0), and Wellsboro (3-0), before clinching the league title with a home win against NEB (3-0).
Troy finished the season with a win over CV (3-0).
In the playoffs they defeated Williamson, but came up short in the finals against Wellsboro (3-2).
Kali Ayres led the way with 222 kills, 32 aces, and 332 digs, while topping 500 assists and 500 digs for her career.
Aryana Andrus had 327 kills and 115 blocks, going over 500 kills for her career, while Brenna Jackson had 653 assists, 279 digs, and 38 aces, going over 750 assists and 500 digs for her career.
Marlee Stanton added 118 kills, 228 digs, and 71 aces, as Josie Kerrick notched 85 kills, 35 aces, 27 blocks, and 144 digs.
Ali Bailey had 273 digs and 36 aces, Haidyn Watson added 119 digs, and Cameron Barbour finished with 34 blocks.
They lose key seniors Ayres, Stanton, Barbour, and Kerrick but return the rest to try and get that district title.
“We will miss the seniors we lose this year, but look forward to building on what we have done again next year,” Herman said. “It is great to see the growth we have made and I can't wait to see what we do next year.”
