COLLEGE: WYALUSING GRAD WOODRUFF HAS BIG DAY AT PENN COLLEGE INVITATIONAL (2024-11-23)
BY BRYAN SEYMOURNorthern Tier Sports ReportAnother week of college wrestling takes us to Williamsport for the Penn College Invitational. Eight Division III colleges were part of the tournament. Representing Penn College was Wyalusing grad Nick Woodruff.
Wrestling in the 197 pound bracket and seeded second, Woodruff opened his tournament in the round of 16 facing the University of Scranton’s Joseph Epright. Securing the first takedown followed by an escape, Woodruff would get another takedown and earn the fall in 1:28.
In the quarterfinals, Woodruff faced Alvernia University’s Sam Myers. Scoring the first takedown and taking a 7-0 lead after the first period. Taking the down position in the second period. Woodruff would get the reversal to take a 9-0 lead going into the third period. Starting in the neutral position, Woodruff would get a takedown and near-fall points. Woodruff would secure the win by technical fall 16-0 in 5:50.
Moving into the semi-finals, Woodruff would face Castleton University’s Stephen Jennings. Again, Woodruff lead from the beginning with scoring the opening takedown and take a 7-0 lead after the first period. In the second period Woodruff would get two different sets of 4 point near-fall points, enroute to another technical fall. This time 15-0 in 4:15.
In the finals Woodruff would face off against another Castleton University wrestler in Josh Negron. Woodruff again would open the scoring with the first takedown. However, Woodruff would find himself trailing after the first period 7-4. After the second period, Woodruff would find himself trailing 9-4 after giving up an escape and stall point. Choosing the bottom position in the third, Woodruff would get a reversal and near-fall to make it 9-8. Woodruff would let Negron up to make the score 10-8 with under :20 seconds to go. It was here Woodruff would get a takedown to make the score 11-10 and secure 2 more nearfall points to make the final score 13-10.
With the first-place finish, Woodruff would be awarded the Most Valuable Wrestler of the tournament.
