NTL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: WYALUSING LOSES CLOSE ONE TO WAVERLY IN SEASON OPENER (2024-11-30)
Northern Tier Sports ReportWYALUSING — For three quarters Wyalusing hung with Waverly, bug the Wolverines got hot in the fourth to pull away for the 51-38 win in non-league girls’ basketball action Saturday.
Waverly did most of their damage from deep with seven 3-balls, while Wyalusing did a good job getting to the free throw line, where they went 18-for-25 on the night.
Alysha Botts led the Rams with 15 points, including a 9-for-13 game from the charity stripe, while Chloe Bennett chipped in with 10 points, all in the second half. She had two 3-balls, and a 4-for-4 night from the free throw line.
Emily Johns and Rachel Wilson had four points apiece, Treanna Nickeson netted three, while Alissa Baldwin added two.
Ryleigh Judson had 16 points to lead the Wolverines, with Addison Westbrook scoring 15.
Waverly jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but the Rams would take an 8-6 lead late in the first quarter. A Westbrook 3-ball just before the buzzer put the Wolverines up 9-8.
Waverly would hit three 3-pointers in the second quarter en route to 13 points, but Wyalusing came back by getting to the free throw line, where they went 8-for-11 to find themselves down just 22-20 at the half.
It was a defensive battle in the third, with Waverly out scoring the Rams 6-3, as Wyalusing’s only points came on a Bennett 3-ball.
Waverly would erupt for 23 points in the fourth quarter, behind eight from Westbrook, and seven out of Judson, as six different Wolverines scored.
Wyalusing had their best quarter of the game, too, netting 15 with seven out of Bennett, and six from Botts, but it just wasn’t enough.
Wyalusing (0-1) will host Delaware Valley on Wednesday with a 6:30 p.m. start.
