NTL BOYS' BASKETBALL: NEB DROPS THRILLER TO MONTROSE (2024-12-03)
Northern Tier Sports ReportMONTROSE — NEB was out scored 19-11 in the fourth quarter as they fell 59-51 at Montrose during their season opener in non-league boys’ hoops action Tuesday.
The game was tied at 40-all going into the fourth before the Meteors pulled ahead.
Four different Panthers hit double figures, led by Tanner Herb’s 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting, to go with six boards, and five steals.
Eli Stanton shot 5-for-10 from the floor for 12 points plus six assists, and two steals, while Cooper Brown had 11 points and two steals.
Dayton Russell had 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting, while adding five boards, with Clay Wilks rounding out the Panther scoring with one point.
Connor Flynn had 23 points to lead Montrose, with Jack Russell netting 16.
The Meteors took a 17-14 lead behind seven points from Jack Russell, while Herb tased NEB with nine points, including two 3-balls.
The scoring slowed down in the second quarter as Flynn had seven of his team’s nine points, while Brown and Herb had four points each for the Panthers, who found themselves down 26-22 at the break.
NEB exploded for 18 third quarter points as Dayton Russell notched eight, and Stanton finished with seven, knot the game up at 40 going into the final frame.
In the fourth, though, Flynn had seven as Montrose went 7-for-10 from free throw line to ice the win.
NEB won the JV game 49-40 behind 18 points from Dan Barrett, 12 out of Nate Gross, and 10 from Wilks.
The Panthers travel to the Montgomery tournament this weekend.
