NTL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: WELLSBORO USES 2ND QUARTER BURST TO DOWN TROY (2021-02-24)

TROY — Wellsboro used a hot shooting second quarter to top Troy 43-35 in NTL girls’ basketball action Wednesday.

Hannah Zimmerman finished with 16 points, including a 7-for-9 performance from the free throw line, as Sydney Taylor had nine points and six steals.


Rachel Kingsley finished with eight points, six boards and four steals, while MaKenna Matthews added two points.


Abbye Cavanaugh led Wellsboro with 10 points followed by Emma Coolidge with nine. Kiyah Boyce chipped in with eight, Bailey Monks netted six as Rylie Boyce and Kathryn Burnett had four points apiece. Sarah Mosher rounded things out with two points.


Wellsboro opened up the game with a 4-0 run, but Troy rallied, going on an 8-2 run of their own to go up 8-6. Late in the quarter Zimmerman banked home a 3-pointer for an 11-6 lead at the first horn.


Then, in the second quarter, the Hornets out scored Troy 16-2 behind eight points from Kiyah Boyce and six from Coolidge, to take a 22-13 lead at the midway point.


Wellsboro extended their lead in the third quarter as they held Troy to just one field goal, a bucket by Zimmerman, while Monks and Cavanaugh had four points each.


Down 32-19 going into the fourth, the Trojans rallied, scoring 16 in the final frame as Taylor had all nine of her points. It wasn’t enough, though, as Wellsboro kept the at arm’s length to pull out the win.


With the victory the Hornets move one game closer to .500, a mark they have to hit to compete at districts. Troy falls to 6-10 as they travel to NP-Mansfield Friday.
