NTL BOYS' BASKETBALL: FARRELL'S LATE FREE THROWS LEADS TOWANDA PAST MUNCY TO CLAIM TOURNAMENT TITLE (2024-12-14)
Northern Tier Sports ReportMUNCY — Darrius Farrell had a season low three points for Towanda on Saturday, but he may scored the biggest one of his career in the fourth quarter when he hit a free throw to put them up by one with two seconds to go on Muncy in the Muncy Christmas Tournament Title game. The Indians’ last second heave was off, and the Black Knights won the tournament championship, 48-47, for the first time since they’ve been traveling down there.
“Our group showed incredible resiliency tonight,” said Towanda coach Landon Henry. “In the four years we have been in the Muncy Tournament we have yet to win a game. This weekend, our guys believed in themselves, and each other, and won back to back games. Winning is not easy, and I believe our guys are beginning to understand the toughness it takes to close a game out.”
The Knights had a nine point lead with under two minutes to go when Muncy rallied to tie it up with seconds left, before Farrell went 1-for-2 from the line to win the game.
“Credit to Muncy, who never stopped fighting for the 32 minutes,” said Henry. “We will enjoy this as a group.”
Freshman Boom Thompson led Towanda with 16 points as Landon Clark netted 11, and Bayley Poll scored 10.
Markell Garner added six, with Connor Barnes scoring two.
Dominick Guardini led Muncy with 14 points.
Muncy led 11-9 after one thanks to five points from Stiles Eyer. Clark had five points to lead the Knights.
Towanda would out score Muncy 12-9 in the second behind a 10-point effort from Thompson.
Poll hit two 3-balls in the third as Towanda stayed ahead of the Indians, 35-33, heading into the final frame.
In the fourth it was Clark hitting two 3-pointers to lead the Knights, as Towanda hung on for the title.
Towanda (3-2) will take their 3-game win streak to NPL on Tuesday.
