NTL WRESTLING: CANTON EDGES NP-LIBERTY ON THE MATS (2024-12-17)

Northern Tier Sports Report
CANTON — Canton won seven matches to NP-Liberty’s six as they edged out the Mounties, 38-30, in NTL wrestling action Tuesday.

“We had to control some match-ups,” Canton coach Lyle Wesneski said. “We got the flip, luckily, and we were able to control a couple up top that we had to split in order to have a chance at the end. I wanted good matches to happen, like Vermilya and Pequignot, and Oakes and Rockwell, and those matches needed to happen.”

Leland Pepper (215) opened things up with a fall for the Warriors, while NPL got back to back falls to take a 12-6.

Henry Proseus (114) tied tings up with a forfeit, followed by Levi Vermilya (121) scoring a fall.

The 127-pound match-up was between two state qualifiers, with NPL’s Bryce Pequignot pulling out the 13-7 win over Lyle Vermilya.

Canton came back with Ethan Brasington (133) earning a 12-6 decision over Hoyt Pequignot for a 21-15 lead.

A Brayden Pequignot (139) fall tied things up again, but back to back wins by Canton’s Manuel Halbfoerster (145) and Tommy Preston (152) saw Canton take a 32-21 advantage.

Riley Oakes (160) pulling out an 11-6 win over Canton’s Carson Rockwell kept NPL’s chances alive.

However, Blane Wesneski (172) shut the door win a fall at 172 for the Warriors.

NPL’s Easton Cleveland-Pequignot (189) ended the match with a forfeit win.

“I think our young kids, they battled,” coach Wesneski said. “We’ve got a lot of kids, it’s their first year ever wrestling, so they’re still learning every time they go out there. We’re trying to teach them different positions, and just doing the best we can giving them a crash course on wrestling, and they’re listening, and they’re trying hard.”

Canton (2-0) travels to Williamson on Thursday.
