NTL BOYS' BASKETBALL: NEB EKES OUT ROAD WIN OVER NPL (2024-12-19)

Northern Tier Sports Report
LIBERTY — NEB held on to beat NP-Liberty, 50-47, during NTL boys’ basketball action Thursday.

The Panthers were down 21-18 at the half, but took a 36-35 lead into the final frame. In the fourth hit just enough free throws - 5-for-11 - to pull out the win.

“It was a tough game on the road,” said NEB coach Paul Burgert. NP-Liberty is well coached, and they play very hard. We struggled to put the ball in the basket tonight, but our boys played their butts off. I have to give a shout out to Dayton Russell, he was everywhere in this game. We got a great effort tonight out of everyone, I’m really proud of the guys.”

Tanner Herb led NEB with 14 points as Russell, and Cooper Brown had eight points apiece.

Eli Stanton scored six points, with Clay Wilks netting five. Tyler Thoman had four, Mac Burgert netted three, and Brennin Thoman rounded things out with two.

Adynn Wheeland led NPL with 18 points as Louis Mercantino netted 11.

NPL led 11-10 after the first quarter as Wheeland had five for the Mounties, with Russell scoring four for NEB.

It was another low scoring frame in the second with NPL edging out NEB, 10-8, for the 3-point lead at the half.

The Panther offense opened up a bit in the third as they hit seven field goals, led by Herb’s seven points to go up one.

In the final frame Brown had four points to lead NEB, including 2-for-4 from the line, while Burgert hit a 3-ball.

NEB (6-3) has some time off before their next game as they play Benton after Christmas.
