ON TAP FOR TODAY: NPL-WYALUSING HIGHLIGHT A BIG DAY OF BOYS' BASKETBALL (2021-02-25)

Northern Tier Sports Report
A few big boys’ basketball games today, especially when it comes to the NTL and district playoffs.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

NP-Liberty (11-2) at Wyalusing (11-4), 6 p.m.: The last remaining league race that has yet to be called. The Mountaineers have a 2-game lead in the loss column over the Rams, and beat them at home just this past Saturday. Yet, if Wyalusing can get the upset then that advantage closes to one game, and NPL has Canton and NEB left to play.

NEB (9-7) at CV (3-14), 6 p.m.: The red hot Panthers have two games left, both on the road. They just beat the Indians last week, using a 28 point first quarter to do it. NEB has moved into the third slot in the district standings, and may need to win out to hold the spot.

Athens (11-8) at Towanda (4-12), 6 p.m.: The Knights are coming off a win over Milton on Wednesday, and look to close out their last home game with a win. They played Athens tough last, even leading at one point, so this could be a chance to show off their improvement. The Wildcats are battling for a home playoff game.

Troy (16-2) at Wellsboro (13-3), 6 p.m.: Troy’s win over NP-Liberty Tuesday means this game has no bearing in the NTL race, but it does have a lot of weight in the district standings. The Trojans are .02 behind Central Columbia for second place in Class AAA, and a win here could nudge them ahead. That would mean a home game in the semifinals, should they get there, instead of driving to Bloomsburg.

Canton (9-8) at Sayre (4-11), 6 p.m.: The Warriors are coming off a tough loss to NP-Liberty, but will get another shot at them on Saturday. Before then they have to take on Sayre, who is trying to build some momentum before next week’s playoffs. Canton sits just outside the top three in Class AA, so they will likely need to win out to capture that third seed.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

NP-Liberty (5-8) at Canton (5-11), 6 p.m.: There will be no playoffs for the Warriors, but they are coming off a win against North Rome Christian School Wednesday. They lost to NPL on Tuesday by a point, so expect another close one. The Lady Mounties are battling for a home playoff game in Class A.
