THE WEEK AHEAD: WINTER SPORTS STARTS ROLLING AGAIN AS WE HEAD INTO JANUARY (2025-01-05)

Northern Tier Sports Report
Winter sports looks to get into high gear this week with 38 contests on the docket. On the wrestling mats Wyalusing heads to Towanda for the Standing Stone Trophy, while divisional action heats up on the basketball courts.

WRESTLING

Monday, January 6

Canton (2-1) at Montoursville (6-0), 7 p.m.: Canton takes the trip south to take on Montoursville, who sits on top of the District IV Duals standings. Montoursville defeated Towanda back in December.


Wyalusing (7-8) at Troy (2-4), 7 p.m.: Both teams are coming off 2-4 performances at their duals tournaments over the weekend. This will be Troy’s first home dual match of the season.


Tuesday, January 7

Athens (3-0) at Canton (2-1), 7 p.m.: Canton’s busy week continues as they host Athens, who comes in undefeated on the season.


Towanda (12-3) at NEB (4-6), 7 p.m.: The Knights took second at their annual Flynn Energy Duals over the weekend, while the Panthers saw six wrestlers get on the podium at the South Williamsport Tournament.


Troy (2-4) at NP-Liberty (5-4), 7 p.m.: The Trojans hit the road as they head to Liberty, as part of their three matches in four days this week.


Wednesday, January 8

Wyalusing (7-8), NEB (4-6) at Williamson (1-2), 7 p.m.: Wyalusing and NEB will wrestle Williamson back to back to fit into Williamson's schedule.


Towanda (12-3) at Central Columbia (4-8), 7 p.m.: A make-up from before Christmas, the Knights head south for their second match in two days.


Thursday, January 9

Troy (2-4) at Athens (3-0), 7 p.m.: The Trojans hit the road with their third match in four days as the Wildcats return home after a road match at Canton to start the week.


Friday, January 10

Wyalusing (7-8) at Towanda (12-3), 7 p.m.: These two will meet to decide who takes home the Standing Stone Trophy, with the Knights pulling out a win last year.


Troy at Elmira Tournament: Troy will head North of the Border for the two day tournament.


Canton at Mid-Winter Mayhem: The Warriors head out to IUP for one of the toughest tournament in the state.


Saturday, January 11

Troy at Elmira Tournament: Troy will wrap up in Elmira with their fifth day of wrestling in six days this week.


Canton at Mid-Winter Mayhem: Canton will wrap up at IUP with their fourth day of wrestling this week.


BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Tuesday, January 7

Troy (5-2) at Towanda (6-3), 7:30 p.m.: Towanda comes in on a 3-game win streak while Troy is coming off a big win over CV. This will be just Towanda’s second home game of the season.


NEB (7-3) at Canton (4-4), 7:30 p.m.: The Panthers have won two straight while the Warriors are on a 2-game losing streak. 


Wellsboro (4-5) at Wyalusing (1-6), 7:30 p.m.: The Hornets have won two of three, including a win over Athens, while the Rams are coming off a loss to Towanda.


Thursday, January 9

Athens (2-6) at Troy (5-2), 6:15 p.m.: Troy will host the Wildcats in a divisional contest with an early start. Athens is on a 3-game losing streak coming into the week.


Canton (4-4) at NP-Liberty (4-5), 7:30 p.m.: NPL has gone 1-2 over their last three games, though had a tough game against Muncy. 


NPM (7-2) at Wyalusing (1-6), 7:30 p.m.: The Tigers won their bracket at the Josh Palmer Fund Tournament, but are coming off a loss to Montoursville.


Sayre (6-3) at NEB (7-3), 7:30 p.m.: A key NTL Small School contest, Sayre won the Valley Christmas Tournament, but recently lost to Mountain View.


Towanda (6-3) at Wellsboro (4-5), 7:30 p.m.: The Knights hit the road as they travel out to the Hornets. Both teams have wins over Athens this season.


Saturday, January 11

Canton (4-4) at Troy (5-2), 7 p.m.: Part of a quadruple header (counting JV games) on Saturday. The Lady Trojans take on Athens in a varsity match-up at 4 p.m. while JV games will prelude both varsity contests.


GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Monday, January 6

Wellsboro (3-3) at Towanda (2-5), 6 p.m.: The Knights will be looking to break their 4-game losing streak. Wellsboro comes in on a 2-game losing streak of their own.


Sayre (1-5) at Wyalusing (4-5), 6 p.m.: The Rams are coming off a big win over Troy as they welcome the Redskins in a make-up. Sayre comes in with a 4-game losing streak.


St. John Neumann (4-3) at NEB (5-2), 6 p.m.: Neumann comes in winners in three of their last four games, while the Panthers are coming off a big win over NPL.


Canton (5-3) at NP-Mansfield (4-5), 7:30 p.m.: The Warriors have won two straight while the Tigers are coming off a win over Wellsboro.


Wednesday, January 8

Wyalusing (4-5) at Wellsboro (3-3), 6 p.m.: The Rams head west to take on a Hornets team on a 2-game losing streak coming into the week.


Canton (5-3) at NEB (5-2), 7:30 p.m.: A key divisional contest as the Panthers host Canton. Both teams come in undefeated in divisional play, though NEB has just one league loss while Canton has two.


Towanda (2-5) at Troy (5-4), 7:30 p.m.: Troy is coming off a tough road loss at Wyalusing, while the Knights are looking to break their 4-game losing streak coming into the week.


Friday, January 10

NEB (5-2) at Sayre (1-5), 6 p.m.: The Panthers head to Sayre, who’ve lost four straight.


NP-Liberty (2-4) at Canton (5-3), 6 p.m.: The Warriors defeated NPL to win their tournament title as the Mounties look to break a 2-game losing streak.


Wyalusing (4-5) at NP-Mansfield (4-5), 7:30 p.m.: Another trip west for the Rams as they take on a Tiger team that is 2-1 over their last three games.


Saturday, January 11

Towanda (2-5) at Williamsport (2-8), 2 p.m.: Four games in six days for the Knights as they head south to take on the Millionaires. Williamsport sports a 6-game losing streak this season.


Athens (6-3) at Troy (5-4), 4 p.m.: Troy ends the week taking on a Wildcat team that has won three of their last four. This is part of a quadruple header (including JV) on Saturday at the Commons Building.


GIRLS’ WRESTLING

Saturday, January 11

Towanda hosts Quad Match, 11 a.m.: Towanda girls’ will host their first matches in program history as they welcome three other teams.


SWIMMING & DIVING

Thursday, January 9

Athens at Towanda, 4:30 p.m.: The Knights continue their home stretch as they host their rivals from the North.
