NTL WRESTLING: CANTON FALLS TO ATHENS LATE (2025-01-07)
Northern Tier Sports ReportCANTON — Canton led early but Athens won the final three weight classes to pull past the Warriors, 39-33, during NTL wrestling action Tuesday.
The Warriors led 27-6 at one point, but Athens chipped away, eventually out scoring them 33-6 to get the win.
There were two big matches on the night, Canton’s Lyle Vermilya (127) edging Lucas Persun, 2-0, and Athens’ Treyton Barrett (145) getting a 13-10 decision over Tommy Preston.
The Warriors won the first four matches as Leland Pepper (215) opened with a fall, followed by forfeits for Levi Landau (285), Carson Castle (107), and Levi Vermilya (114).
Athens’ Zaine Campbell (121) got Athens on the scoreboard with a fall, followed by Lyle Vermilya’s win.
Wyatt Clink (133) started the Athens rally with a fall, followed by Karson Sipley (139) getting a pin, as well. Then came Barrett’s win.
Carson Rockwell (152) got a fall for Canton to try to stem the tide, but Athens’ came back with a fall from Brendan Cooke (160).
The match ended with back to back forfeits to Ethan Elliott (172), and Connor Davidson (189).
Canton is at IUP’s Mid-Winter Mayhem, starting on Friday.
