NTL GIRLS' BASKETBALL: ROUGH THIRD QUARTER HURTS CANTON IN LOSS TO ATHENS (2025-01-22)
Northern Tier Sports ReportCANTON — Canton led Athens early but a big third quarter lifted the Wildcats past the Warriors, 47-33, during NTL girls’ basketball action Tuesday.
Canton was up 10-6 at the first horn, but Athens rallied for a 17-13 lead at the half. They started the third with an 11-0 run to take control of the game.
The Warriors got the deficit to within 11 in the fourth but couldn’t quite mount a charge after that.
Cailyn VanNoy had 12 points, three assists, and three steals for Canton, as Kendall Kitchen finished with 12 points, and two steals.
Lydia Roupp added nine points, Alexis McRoberts had five boards, and Danah Wesneski notched two steals.
McKenna Jarvis had 21 to lead Athens as Sara Bronson finished with 12. Addy Wheeler, and Allison Kemp had five points each, as Alissa Vough, and Kelsie Noel both chipped in with two.
Kitchen and VanNoy combined for eight of the team’s 10 first quarter points as they took the four point lead.
Jarvis had six to lead Athens’ rally in the second as they took the four point lead at the break.
The Wildcats came out of the locker room hot, hitting four of their five five shots as they went up 28-13 on Canton.
A 5-0 run from VanNoy cut it to 28-18, but a Wheeler runner followed by a Kemp 3-ball extended the lead back to 15 points.
The two teams then traded buckets to end the frame.
Kitchen nailed a three to start the fourth to make it a 12-point game, but Jarvis came back with two freebies.
Roupp get a free throw to drop, followed by a lay-up to make it 37-26, but a Jarvis 3-ball made it 40-26, and Canton never recovered.
Canton (9-6) will host Towanda on Thursday.
