NTL WRESTLING: CANTON DROPS MATCH TO SULLIVAN COUNTY (2025-01-22)

Northern Tier Sports Report
CANTON — A short-handed Canton wrestling squad fell to Sullivan County, 46-29, during non-league dual match action Tuesday.

The Griffins won eight of the 13 bouts - three by forfeit - as Lyle Vermilya (121), Tommy Preston (152), Blane Wesneski (172), and Leland Pepper (189) all had falls for the Warriors. Carson Castle (107) notched a forfeit.

Vermilya put Canton the scoreboard first with an 18-1 tech fall over Cole Barto in 4:17.

Sullivan, though, took the next four weight classes as Colton Wade (127) pinned Henry Proseus in 30 seconds, Wyatt Bagley (133) scored a forfeit, as teammates Chase Preston (139), and Keegan Bagley (145) got third period falls to put the Griffins up 24-5.

Preston pinned Carson Tillotson in 4:58, while Bagley pinned Manuel Halbfoerster in 5:49.

Canton’s Tommy Preston ended that run with a fall over Layne Price in 1:11.

Next came the match of the night with Sullivan’s Tucker Evans scoring a 12-4 major over Canton’s Lawrence Halbfoerster.

Evans led 3-1 through two periods, but Halbfoerster would knot it up at 4-4 with a double leg takedown in the third.

Evans would get the escape, followed by takedown and back points for the major decision, and a 28-11 lead.

Blane Wesneski (172) and Leland Pepper (189) notched first period falls to cut it to 28-23.

However, forfeits to Sullivan’s Evan Brown (215) and Drayman Sperry (285) secured the win for the Griffins.

Castle (107) got the forfeit win when they made the turn, while Sullivan’s Andrew Kapec finished off the victory with a fall over Levi Vermilya in 1:12.

Vermilya did put Kapec in trouble early, getting a takedown, and two back points, but Kapec got out of trouble. He scored a reversal, then two sets of back points before getting the fall.

Canton will need to beat Troy on Wednesday to punch their ticket to the District IV Duals.
